The Devil Is an Ass is a Jacobean comedy by Ben Jonson, first performed in 1616 and first published in 1631. The Devil Is an Ass followed Bartholomew Fair (1614), one of the author's greatest works, and marks the start of the final phase of his dramatic career. However just or unjust may be the characterisation of Jonson's later plays as his "dotages," there would be no more great works after Bartholomew Fair, and a full decade would elapse between The Devil Is an Ass and Jonson's next play, The Staple of News. The play opens in Hell, with Satan and an inferior devil called Pug. Pug wants to be sent to Earth to do the Devil's work of tempting men to evil – but Satan thinks he isn't up to the job; the world has grown so sophisticated in its vices, especially in the moral cesspool of London, that a simple devil like Pug will be severely out of his depth. Pug pleads his case, however, and Satan sends him into the world, specifically to plague an eccentric and foolish gentleman named Fabian Fitzdottrel. Fitzdottrel is obsessed with the idea of meeting a devil; he has consorted with magicians and conjurers (Simon Forman among others) in hopes of encountering an imp who will aid him in the discovery of buried treasure. In addition to his main mania, Fitzdottrel has subsidiary obsessions: he dresses his beautiful young wife sumptuously, but clothes himself in second-hand garments, which he wheels and deals over with enthusiasm. In the play's first Act he is enthusiastic about a fancy cloak that he plans to wear to the Blackfriars Theatre to see a play. Pug comes to him in the body of a thief who'd been hanged earlier in the morning; Fitzdottrel refuses to believe that Pug is a devil, since the corpse's feet are not cloven hooves—but Pug's claim that his name is "Devil" (or "Deville") is enough to earn him a place as a servant in Fitzdottrel's household.

This duo represent a hit and a miss by Jonson. The Devil has been produced successfully in modern times, while the more experimental Poetaster has remained largely in obscurity. These paperbacks are the most affordable editions available.

Following the widely-acclaimed staging of The Devil is an Ass by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1995-96, this authoritative edition is now available in paperback with a new Preface about the production. In his introduction, Peter Happe looks at the special place of the play in Jonson's own life, his interest in London, the theatrical setting of the play and its sources and analogues. There are critical and explanatory commentaries and a glossarial index. No other edition covers such a range of material. The play is seen in its historical and political context, by linking it with late medieval and Elizabethan plays, as well as with the Jacobean stage. The text is meticulously and reliably edited, with modernised spelling for today's reader. A commentary is provided to explain difficult or specially significant passages. The stage history of the play also includes recent productions.

Another Entertaining, Mildly Satirical Comedy by Ben Jonson

Ben Jonson's mildly satirical plays abound with unscrupulous characters, con men, and gullible dupes. The Devil is an Ass is no exception. Several subplots involving deceit and trickery are successfully interwoven, creating an enjoyable comedy.
Nick Hern Books (London) publishes an extensive set of plays for students, actors, and theatregoers in their Drama Classics series. The Devil is an Ass is available in a small, slender, good quality, soft cover edition. The introduction by Simon Trussler is quite good. A short glossary of unfamiliar words is provided, but there are no footnotes.
The play begins in Hell. A lesser devil, Pug, desires to demonstrate his value and requests an opportunity to visit London to entrap innocents and ensure their doom. Satan is skeptical. He considers modern 1616 London to be more corrupt and dissolute than Hell itself. Satan reluctantly allows Pug to proceed. In London Pug animates and then inhabits the corpse of a recently hung thief.
Pug renames himself Devil and acquires a position as a servant to Fitzdottrel, an amoral, greedy squire from Norfolk. Almost immediately, both the reader and Devil are amazed to learn that Fitzdottrel is willing to sacrifice his innocent wife's reputation in trade for an expensive cloak for himself. We are amused when Fitzdottrel himself becomes the target of a sophisticated con-man, Merecraft, a specialist (a projector) in developing get-rich schemes that involve monopolies granted by the government of King James. As other interconnected scams emerge, we readers happily observe that the victims are all unscrupulous individuals. The ending is rather different from most plays involving a devil figure.
I have also used the Oxford University Press publication titled The Devil is an Ass and Other Plays by Ben Jonson. The introduction by Margaret Jane Kidnie is quite good. Extensive footnotes are provided.
The Devil is an Ass was first performed in 1616. It was first printed in 1631. Nearly four centuries later I am posting my review on the Internet.
