African Adventure With A Templar Title
By Fred Rayworth
This story was really an African adventure with Doc and the gang and had little to do with the Templars. In a way, I was glad as I bought this story along with a Templar book from a different author and that one made me kind of sick of the whole thing!
In this story, the premise is searching for King Solomon's Mines after some Viking chased after it before a Templar went after it, or something like that. Anyway, Doc's cousin and her husband drag Doc to Africa and the story completely shifts into them becoming embroiled in the attempted takeover of a central African country. The action swings to the bad guys and the other bad guys and once in a while gets back to Doc and the gang, then shifts back to the bad guys again. What about the Templar thing? We hardly ever hear about it until almost the end, except for a brief mention here and there as they try to unravel bits and pieces of the mystery.
The one thing this book did for me is convince me I never ever want to go to central Africa. Mr. Christopher paints such a dreary picture of life there that my worst nightmares could not come close to how bad things are, especially in the Sudan and that region. At times the story was more like horror than a thriller.
I guess he is going to keep the Templar titles but just as a premise because if this trend keeps up, the stories won't have much to do with actual Templars. I really don't mind that at all.
I must also mention that Doc's nemeses, Blackwater only makes a brief appearance in this story. Maybe we'll see more of them in the next one.
The writing is still top-notch and the story flows well. My only beef is that I just didn't like the setting. It didn't draw me in that much. I would have liked Mr. Christopher to concentrate more on Doc and less on all the side characters. I understand why he did it this time, and the big reveal in the end wasn't bad at all, but overall, I liked his previous stories better, especially when he had Blackwater on his heels. In the next one, they (Blackwater) don't necessarily have to be the bad guys but Doc needs someone hot on his heels. On this outing, Docs main nemeses was the whole country rather than any particular bad guy.
Still, not a bad read. Waiting for the next one. Recommended.

an OK summer read
By palestrina7
I read the new Legion book this week, and the good news is that it is exactly what you would expect from Paul Christopher, a fast-moving, sprawling, historical romp. The bad news is that it is exactly what you would expect from Christopher. The one thing he does well is come up with wonderful conceits around which to spin his tales. In this case a wild and satisfying notion that there are Vikings - a whole culture - hidden in the African Jungle. Mix in a little King Solomon's mine and you have got the makings of a great yarn. But then that's where it doesn't quite come together for me.
There are a couple of things the author doesn't do well:
1) He doesn't make me CARE about the heroes. I guess I am supposed to care because they are the good guys, but the character development just always fall short. It's a bad sign when I don't care whether the hero(s)gets killed or not.
2) He doesn't yet know how to create a climactic dramatic line. There is no real climax of the action/retribution/vengeance. He sets up a great battle and then dispatches the whole conflict in a page or two, in a somewhat dispassionate style. I can put the book down at literally any point, because it does not really ever create any frantic, white-knuckle page-turning.
Overall, not a bad summer read, but no adrenaline rush.

Paul Christopher Templar series keep getting better and better. A great read for the summer and cant wait for the next one to come out. Character development keeps improving as nuances are drawn. Would recommend to anyone who enjoy suspense with a modicum of history sprinkled in.
