St Gregory is one of the most open and self-revealing of the Fathers of the Church, and his poetry is remarkable for its personal character. In these poems, he speaks of the joys and frustrations of his own life; he reveals his inner questioning about the purpose and values of life in the face of sin and mortality, and his ultimate faith in Christ as redeeming and reconciling all things. St Gregory's poetry has often been compared with St Augustine's Confessions, as showing a peculiarly modern interest in the self. The translations here presented allow the reader to see that self-reflection in its theological context. While St Gregory of Nazianzus' poetry has recently begun to appear in English translations, this is the first book to provide an affordable translation of his major doctrinal poems. Included are poems on the Trinity, Creation and Providence, Angels and the Soul, the Person of Christ, Human Nature and poems debating the Christian understanding of marriage and virginity.

Simply Wonderful
By JustinK
I should say first off that, if you are looking for poetry like that by Frost or Longfellow or innumerable others, this isn't the book you'd want. This poetry is not always theological, but it *is* always faith-filled, or God-focused. If you are not particularly religious, you probably won't appreciate the poetry as much. Here are a few examples of St. Gregory's poetry:
Come, then, and I will speak of the beloved mysteries of God,
whatever Virginity has revealed in these last times.
Once it was, when black night concealed all things.
There was then no beloved morning light; nor had the sun made its fiery way from the east.
The cresent moon, night's glory, did not show.
But all things were jumbled with each other, uselessly wandering
locked together in murky chains of first-born chaos...
And from a different poem:
But I, I have not kept God's holy mysteries,
with a soul initiated in the way again to heaven,
but the dust's weight weighs me down, nor could I manage
to cast my gaze to light, when I rose from the mud
Yes, cast it! But midway there arose a cloud, blocking the view,
the flesh stirred up by a mundane spirit.
Many cares turn about in my heart, this way and that,
empty things, from a wandering mind,
casting Christ, GOd the Word, far off...
But now, while God provided every member as good, to do good things,
evil has found them an instrument toward my death.
What is this law for me? How am I bound upon earth by flesh?
How, as a body mingled with light spirit,
am I not totally mind, a pure nature, not totally
a dust of lesser things, but something else, from both, and both?
Therefore I wage an unending battle of war, with
flesh and soul opposed to one another.
I am the image of God, and am drawn to wickedness...
The subjects covered in the poetry contained in this book ranges widely, and include God, providence, virginity, his own writings, and many others. The book is not overly long, and is definately worth reading again and again. I first became captivated by St. Gregory through his Orations (particularly 2 and 40), but it is above all in his poetry that you get to glimpse into the depths of his mind, both theologically and personally.

Spiritual Poetry from the 4th Century. Who knew!
By B. Marold
Like the other two reviewers so far, I would not recommend this book for someone who is looking for examples of great poetry. For that, go to Coleridge, Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley, Heine, Hoeldrin, Goethe, Novalis, Rimbaud, Verlaine, or Whitman. If you want examples of great spiritual poetry, go to Blake, John Donne, Hopkins, and even Rilke, and Eliot. What is amazing about this is that it exists at all.
For what IS in the poetry, I suggest it is primarily a means to illuminate Gregory Nazianzus' theology. For example, his poem, "On the Soul" begins:
The soul is a breath of God, and has suffered a mixture
of heavenly and earthly, a light hidden in a cave,
but, all the same, divine and imperishable.
For it would not be right for the great God's image to disintegrate in formlessness,
Like mindless lizards and kine.
This is one of the many signposts that Gregory Nazianzus was strongly influenced by Plato, since this imagery comes straight from the myth of the cave in "The Republic". In "Concerning Spiritual Beings", the description of the movements has a strong resembelence to Ptolmey's description of "epicycles".
Whether it is the fault of Gregory Nazianzus or the translator, the poems have very little poetic feel to them. It feels more like prose expresing praise, with lines arranged in a poetic structure. This does NOT mean the book has little value. It has great value as source texts for this Gregory, where the ideas expressed are stated simply, without "apology" or attack against pagans and heretics in Cappadicia or elsewhere.
If the book does nothing else, it gives lots of attention to the Holy Spirit, which seems to diminish in importance through the Patristic period and the "Middle Ages".

Needs to be taken in the context of its original language and epoch.
By Fr. Photios
The only problem is that I wish I had the poems in the original Greek. The translation to English has obviously affected the tone and tempo of these poems. Anyone who is critical of the feel -that it isn't like other poetry in English- needs to keep that in mind. If you read his poetry in the original Greek and compare it to the writing of the time, it is very beautiful and moving. It is, I must agree, definitely religious poetry and not for every body.
