My favorite Penelope Ward novel yet!

Oh the tangled web we weave…
Amelia and Justin were childhood sweethearts. At least until she broke his heart and ran away to live with her father. Nine years later, she inherited a house from her grandmother. The only problem? Half the house belongs to Justin – and he hates her. He also didn’t show up to the house alone.
This book had me feeling all the feels- that’s the first reason I’m giving this book one star.
I felt all the big ones from happiness to sadness to arousal to furstration but I also felt the more obscure ones and ‘WTF’, ‘Oh, HELL no he did not just say that’, ‘Ummmm’ and ‘Oh, my god’ were all things I said out loud during the course of this book. As the two are reunited and Justin doesn’t seem to be able to breathe without throwing a snarky comment in Amelia’s direction my anger levels were running high. I got frustrated with Amelia for just taking it but it turns out, killing someone with kindness sometimes really is the best way to sort it out. The sexual tension between the two is palpable and it was toe-curlingly delicious watching Justin try and fight against the attraction. This book is told from only Amelia’s POV and I felt like this only added to the angst and tension of this book because you’re left having to decipher Justin’s actions on your own.
This book made me change my mind- that’s the second reason I’m giving this book two stars.
I don’t want to give the plot away but I will say this: at about the midway point I had some serious doubts about this story and where it was going. Yet, this author managed to turn it around and change my mind about something which is a hard limit for me. Not only did she turn something I despise into something beautiful but she also managed to redeem Justin and his dickish behaviour in the process.
This book has a guy who writes songs that rhyme- that’s the third reason I’m giving this book three stars.
So, as you may have surmised- I thought Justin was a tool. Actually just a complete and utter jerk with zero filter. I was all about this dude needing to build a bridge and get over himself. But then he started to sing and my memory slipped down to my knees and made them weak. Penelope Ward managed to redeem Justin and make him completely swoon-worthy not only with the words she put into his songs, but also with his actions and his confusion peaking through.
This book doesn’t have a bad guy, or a good guy- that’s the fourth reason I’m giving this book four stars.
These characters are flawed. Bad decisions are made and things are said but the author makes no apology for them. At no time is there a character who is clearly bad or clearly good and there are no clear choices to be made here. I loved that about this book. It was unpredictable because it didn’t follow the traditional path of the tropes collected in their story. There was no virgin-glorification, there was no bitchy girlfriend, there was no perfect bad-boy turned golden-boy and the path they traveled on was not smooth or idyllic.
This book is hot as hell- that’s the fifth reason I’m giving this book five stars.
The sexual tension was there, the angst was there and the uncertainty was there. Even when they were at each other’s throats it was clear that they were always just one misstep away from burning each other’s clothes off with fiery looks and combusting in a torrent of passion. The slow build and denial between them had me frustrated to the point of insanity but it also made the whole thing that much more exciting and erotic. Often, for me, the action stops when the characters hook-up and not only did the author avoid that by drawing it out for so long but even after the sexy times did happen; she managed to keep it fresh and I devoured it all!
There are some things in this book that may be a hard-limit for some but this is by far my favorite book by Penelope Ward and it comes highly recommended.

No more weak heroines please

I'll be honest, I didn't care much for it. It was lukewarm at best even mid-way through. When I started the book I had to grit my teeth and kept on because I honestly could not stand Justin in the 1st half of it. I find his character very immature in how he acted. He held such a grudge for Amelia leaving him when they were kids. So he behaved like a complete jerk off to her when they meet again as adults. However, I find it funny that's it's Justin that ends up leaving her behind alot in the book. Multiple times. Either to go back to his life with his girlfriend, or back to his music career. He just did NOT choose Amelia over the other people/things going on in his life. Yet. So he needs to give the poor girl a break. She was freaking 15 when she ran away and broke his teenage heart and made him somewhat bitter. A scared girl who wasn't thinking clearly. It sucks but they weren't even an actual couple at that time or even aware of each other's feelings. Amelia did try to find him a year later to apologize and explain but he refuses to see her or fix their friendship. He let it fester and shuts her out of his life. And life went on. For both of them.
The story just dragged and I was over Justins' moody temper tantrum. Over the all TOO similar love-triangle that ended up nearly in the same way of Stepbrother Dearest . Alas, heroine was the other woman again. It was just like Elec and Greta all over. Amelia was nothing but kind and respectful to Justin even with his nasty insults and him rubbing his relationship in her face. I wanted to scream at her, "stop taking his abuse". I mean the whole "whore reference" already had me wanting to throat-punch him. But mix that in with the hot & cold signals, lusty stares and suggestive songs, then him going back to his sex marathon with his girlfriend Jade. With Amelia underneath the same roof, hearing everything. It was just too agonizing to read. Amelia takes it all in stride, because why not right? Underneath all the anger and hurt was a love that's written in the stars. But let's first put the heroine through the complete wringer of witnessing his love affair and being left alone when he decides to take off with his girlfriend. Cause god knows the guy will return to her in the end. And it'll all be worth it. For her. For me, I was pretty much spent, drained and exhausted on her behalf. I've no tolerance or patience to be someone's afterthought, 2nd choice, or emotional punching bag.
But I guess It all worked out in the end when Justin mans up and did a 180. But still the book was kinda depressing just because it took a while to get to that turning point. There was a whole heaping of misery and suffering on the heroine's part while the hero barely gets his life interrupted. I expected more of fighter in Justin and wanted him to WANT to PICK Amelia. As first choice. But guess the guy's too loyal and noble. Whatever, I respect that but I felt he was a bit of coward to not take a chance. And leading Amelia on a bit but then deserting her anyways. Reluctantly. But he still did leave. And as for Amelia, she was too much of a Mary Sue sweetheart with the most kindest heart and forgiving nature. Yes, those characteristics did not bode well for me and my blood-thirsty ways. Too much of the saintly, "step all over me but my kindness will prevail" type. I'm more of the "hell no, I will staple your balls to the walls" type of gal. I just needed a stronger heroine, and poor Amelia resembles Greta too much for my liking. That and her constant "I'm sorry" throughout the book to Justin. "I'm sorry, I'm not hot enough to be a musician's girlfriend. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you." etc. Enough with the apologies, you are good enough for him. Believe in your own self-worth.
Also I must mention this as it still upset me. I know it's life and their journey but it still lingers on my mind. When something BIG happened to Amelia in the book, I CANNOT believe Justin chose to leave with Jade and let Amelia go through it all by herself. Despite her protest that she'll be okay and won't need him. I'd just thought he'd put up more of a fight to be a support system to her. Because Amelia truly had no one when that bombshell hit. It made my heart hurt that she was basically alone in her ****SPOILER, SPOILER********SPOILER, SPOILER********SPOILER, SPOILER****
pregnancy, and labor. Even their reunion, nearly a year later was one of accident. It wasn't because he couldn't live without her and seek her out. No, he was still with Jade while Amelia struggled financially and with motherhood . BUT, I will give credit where credit is due and say I LIKE his turnabout and how he step up to the plate to take care of her and her child. Once he realizes how much they mean to him. I respect that but I just hate that Amelia was left to fend for herself while he went on with his life with Jade.

RoomHate is receiving that rare half star rating from me because it was better than “GOOD” but didn’t quite hit my “I REALLY liked it” meter to receive the full four stars. The main reason being that it took far too long for me to connect with the story or the characters. Truth be told, I really didn’t have any emotional response until mid-way through when Bea performed her mic check – that scene had me laughing my butt off. Prior to that, I just wasn’t connecting to any of the characters. I liked Amelia and I felt badly for her situation, but Justin just came off as an a-hole instead of the wounded party in the beginning. While there was some angst and sexual tension, I didn’t feel the level of angst and tension I was expecting based on the blurb or the title. Well, except for Amelia’s foray into voyeurism because that was freaking hot!
I enjoyed the way in which Ward used flashbacks and memories to show us the kind of relationship that Justin and Amelia had as kids and ultimately the “betrayal” that tore them apart. However, I felt as though it was a little too drawn out and by the time the incident was revealed, I was surprised that that was what caused Amelia to sever ties with Justin. I realize she said she was a hormonal teenage who overreacted and while I can clearly see why she wanted the distance from her mother, I just didn’t get her reaction to Justin’s involvement – and, like Amelia, I was a painfully shy introvert at that age but I still couldn’t put myself in her shoes on that one.
Despite all that, I found the second half of the book far more enjoyable as the actual second-chance romance angle played out. The chemistry between Amelia and Justin is undeniable and when they finally go there, it was scorching. But it’s the little things that Justin does in taking care of Amelia and Bea that won me over in the end. Once Justin got over being a tool and he let out the kind, caring, and protective boy that Amelia knew, I couldn’t help but like him. I loved watching Justin take on the role of daddy without realizing it and it broke my heart to see him so upset when he had to travel for five months, not knowing if he was going to return at the end of that time because he hadn’t made peace with being a father-figure, not believing that his parents gave him the tools he needed to be good at it. There were definitely some moments toward the end that had me grabbing the tissues – out of fear, sadness, and happiness. Ward does a good job of bringing the story together at the end and I found myself reading as fast as I could to find out how everything was going to turn out. It’s because the author finally hooked me in and made me laugh and cry in the second half of the book that I have to give RoomHate more than three stars, but because the angst was a bit lacking in the beginning I just can’t give it the full four stars. RoomHate was an enjoyable read and I recommend checking it out for yourself.
