Doane Outdoes Himself With Stellar Book Two

After reading Desmond Doane's "The Dark Man," I wasn't sure what to expect from "The White Night." I guess at the end of the day, I thought this book would be simply setting the stage for Book 3. I knew there will be an epic showdown between the team of Mike and Ford and Chelsea's demon. It would have been easy for Doane to put the pieces into place for that showdown and mail in the second book of the trilogy.

This book was no mail-in effort. Doane outdid himself with a thrilling book that had me wishing I could put a plot together half as well as him.

Just like in "The Dark Man," we are thrust into the life of Ford Atticus Ford, the lead investigator from a defunct TV ghost-hunting show. Ford is still questioning things after the events in the first book and is trying to put everything together while stationed in the beach in Oregon. Meanwhile, we see a dual story of Mike at home on the beach in the East Coast. The two former partners are about as far apart as they can be geographically, but their lives are as intertwined as ever as forces from beyond the grave are conspiring to put them together again.

I nestled in, secure that Desmond Doane (aka USA Today bestseller Ernie Lindsey) would provide a smooth, comfortable, spooky story. Little did I know he would scare the pants off me, causing me to swear at the author midway through the book. Just when you think you have the plot figured out, you better check behind you and make sure no mirrors are shattering down the hall or have any doors swinging shut.

As much as I loved "The Dark Man," I have to be honest: "The White Night" is a better book. The alternating perspectives from the two leads perfectly sets up whatever Doane has planned for the next book, but he did so with a punch. In my review for the first book, I noted the similarities to Dean Koontz. The comparisons are well deserved and Doane inched even closer to cementing that legacy.

REVIEW: THE WHITE NIGHT by Desmond Doane

The description for THE WHITE NIGHT begins:
"Yes, you should be afraid of the dark..." in the context of this story, with its parallel plotting, it's not only the night hours you should fear. In addition to that determined right-hander demon (if possible, more evil than in the first GRAVEYARD: CLASSIFIED novel, THE DARK MAN), working his own demonic strategy, there is that lesser-known but supremely terrifying paranormal phenomenon: the black-eyed children. (No, not children whose eye color is black: these are solid black, no pupil/iris delineation.) They're not articulate; their monologue seems confined to "You need to let me in," and "Feed me. I'm hungry." But it seems they do have an agenda, and the rationale Mr. Doane proposes, through protagonist Ford, is mind-boggling.

So do be afraid of the dark; but be extra cautious in the daytime too, and careful whom you invite in.

Although I am on the author's advance list and received a copy, I also bought THE WHITE NIGHT on release.

Vastly Entertaining!

When the first "Graveyard: Classified" book was recommended to me, I have to admit that I was skeptical. There's a veritable avalanche of paranormal reads out there, and sifting through the detritus to find the good stuff can make anyone balk. But, I took a chance and accepted Almighty Ford Atticus Ford's invitation into his world of fading stardom, and found a hidden jewel. Needless to say, I was completely charmed by Ford (and Mike, and Ulie!) and when I saw this book, the sequel, I greedily pounced, like Ford on a spotcamgirl email. And this book was just as tasty.
While the first book treated Mike as a more secondary character, I feel as though "The White Knight" really gave us the opportunity to get to know him. His story line is so reflective of the human condition that it's impossible NOT to connect with him on some level.
Ford is also developed so carefully, so realistically, that it makes me wonder if these people aren't actual friends of the author. Well written, Mr. Doane. I doff my hat, sir.
To put it plainly, don't let this book, or better still, this series, pass you by. You don't know what you're missing.

About the Author
C. Michael Bowers is an Associate Clinical Professor at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA. He is also the Deputy Medical Examiner in Ventura, California. Dr. Bowers is a practicing forensic dentist and consultant who has testified and worked on hundreds of cases where dental evidence has been involved. He is a former Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Odontology, a Senior Crime Scene Analyst for the International Association for Identification (IAI) and has written other articles, chapters and books on forensic dentistry. He owns and operates his own dental practice in Ventura, CA.

It is an invaluable guide for both newcomers and professionals alike. As a lawyer and expert witness who has testified and examined hundreds of cases, Dr. Bowers’ knowledge and insight into both arenas of the courtroom is evident.
The text includes a thorough overview of what a prospective expert should be aware of regarding the legal system and how forensic evidence should be prepared for courtroom presentation. The chapters cover topics such as the admissibility of forensic expert evidence, character traits of expert witnesses, voir dire and direct examination of the expert, cross examination - the expert’s challenge and the lawyer’s strategies. The text also includes an insightful exploration into the science behind forensic science, ethics and forensic expert failures.
The content is well organized and easy to follow. In twelve chapters Dr. Bowers and his co-authors Dr. Mark Page, Mr. Brent Turvey, and Ms. Wendy Koen present information with clear and concise descriptions. The book opens with a reprint of an interesting presentation given by the Honorable Harry T. Edwards – The National Academy of Science Report on Forensic Sciences: What it Means for the Bench and Bar. The first chapter gives the history of English common law and as the title implies, provides advice for the beginning expert.
Chapter 2 explains science as it pertains to forensic science. It explains concepts in a manner that is easy to understand. In Chapter 3 admissibility of expert evidence is discussed. Included is a necessary background of important cases that have contributed to admissibility. The next chapter illustrates forensic expert practice.
Chapter 5 describes how to mange a forensic case, case preparation and how to speak with attorneys. Chapter 6 follows on from this with good and bad traits of expert witnesses, listing what to do and what not to do. Chapter 7 deals with becoming qualified as an expert as well as what to expect with direct examination and Chapter 8 focuses on cross examination.
Chapter 9 resumes with a scientific principal that all experts should be aware of namely uniqueness and individualization in forensic science. The book wraps up with the cases of forensic failures, ethics, and the power entailed in expert testimony.
Most chapters conclude with a box entitled - Innocence Blog- which highlights a case of wrongful conviction. In conclusion, this book is a useful reference and a great addition to any collection of forensic texts.

Everyone watches CSI and forensic related TV series, fake. This is the real information, the science and the expert evidence. Described why certain cases go wrong. And the responsibility of an expert witness. This book opens up my mind and allows me to understand certain legal cases from a different perspective. A great book to have.

What a book !

Student at Ecole Centrale Lyon, top French engineering school, I bought this book.
The latter was extraordinary. Indeed, after a clear presentation of the foundations of fluid mechanics, this book describes the dimensional analysis, the principle of similarity, the notion of boundary layer and finally, presents the vortex theory. At each end of chapter, a detailed summary and many problems with answers are present.
This book of 320 pages constitutes an excellent "Introduction" of fluid mechanics.
I recommend strongly this book to students wishing to deepen and/or to strengthen their knowledge in fluid mechanics. This book is also useful for engineers and teachers who must use it in their own lessons.
The author is very competent.
