At last!

As with all methodologies, Task-Based Language Teaching has been promoted by some and criticised by others. In addition, the definitions of 'task' abound, allowing everyone to call themselves proponents of TBLT.

TBLT is, however an approach, rather than a methodology, and this book does well to set the parameters from the beginning. It is also an important book, in that it documents a large TBLT programme (1200 students) that took place over 10 years, and was successful. At last, we have details of TBLT working as it was designed to work, providing meaningul, authentic language learning, with quantifiable results.

The old man is continually lambasting him for his lies, and it's driving Robert to the brink of madness.

A Tale of Corporate Greed

I enjoyed reading this well written short story. The book was a real eye opener. The story centers around Robert Morgan, a man who worked his way up the corporate ladder of a big oil company. He was the person responsible for gas prices climbing to four dollars a gallon. As most middle class people struggled to afford gas for their cars, this wealthy CEO and his family were enjoying a very lavish lifestyle and driving a big gas guzzling vehicle.

Willie Morgan, the man's late father, often "talked" to his son about his lifestyle and how his greed was affecting others. Read the book to find out what happened to this wealthy man. I highly recommend this book.

Another top-notch tale from author Tom Winton. A highly recommended read.

Robert Morgan is young, a successful (and wealthy) CEO of an oil company, happily married and a family man. Problem is, he is haunted by a "ghost" -- the voice of his long-dead rough-talking garbage man father who berates him for his lies. He hates his tough-talking, drinks-too-much father and everything he stood for. Does he go mad, or does his story have a happy ending? Tom Winton has written another can't-put-it-down story that, in my opinion, is one of his best.

A page turner

This short story really pushed the page-turner buttons because Tom Winton's writing puts you in the character's seat. With the smallest actions of his characters, the story is felt like a scene in a movie. In fact, it felt like I was watching a movie, it seemed so real. Seeing the main character go through so many emotions and coming out on top, was written so well. Another Tom Winton success!

About the Author
Sarah Corbin Robert was the daughter-in-law of the original author and the trustee of Robert’s Rules of Order, Revised. She headed the authorship team that produced the most extensive general revision of the work. Henry M. Robert III is the grandson of General Henry M. Robert and has served as president of the Maryland Association of Parliamentarians and as parliamentarian for the National Association of Parliamentarians (NAP). William J. Evans, a retired attorney, was president of NAP from 1979 to 1981 and has also served as its parliamentarian. Daniel H. Honemann is an attorney in Maryland and a past president of the Maryland Association of Parliamentarians. Thomas J. Balch is a lobbyist and legislative analyst based in Washington, DC, who also served as parliamentarian for NAP.

This is indeed an almost verbatim recording of the reference book that virtually all deliberative bodies use to maintain order at meetings. The dry and technical writing is what you'd expect from such a manual and, all in all, it's very understandable, especially as narrated by the enthusiastic and fresh sounding Meza. But it will be difficult to use as a reference audio--how can you access the section you need without a written table of contents? Aspiring Robert's Rules experts would be aided by such a menu, and perhaps by an introduction or rationale for each type of rule, in addition to the rules themselves. The real Robert's: The authority on parliamentary procedure

As a lawyer and parliamentarian, when I am asked about proper procedure at a meeting, my first question is: What rules do you use? Is there an applicable statute, or bylaws or rules that the organization has adopted? Nine times out of ten, the answer is: "Robert's Rules of Order." Robert's is the most widely used parliamentary manual in the United States.

General Henry M. Robert published the original "Robert's Rules" in 1875 and 1876 and, since the copyright on that edition (and the next few editions) has long since expired, there are numerous unofficial editions on the market. The third edition, published in 1893, is still marketed in paperback by more than one publisher as the "original" Robert's Rules. With the copyright expired, even the name "Robert's" has passed into the public domain, and many imitators have slapped the name "Robert's" on books of parliamentary procedure that bear minimal relation to General Robert's work (much as many dictionaries claim the name "Webster's" without any connection to Noah Webster or the Merriam-Webster brand that carries on his work). This book is the real Robert's, composed by an editorial board appointed by General Robert's heirs (including his descendant Henry III, an eminent parliamentarian in his own right). Now in its 11th edition, published in September 2011, this book "supersedes all previous editions and is intended automatically become the parliamentary authority in organizations whose bylaws prescribe 'Robert's Rules of Order' ... or the like, without specifying a particular edition."

The 11th edition, the first new edition in 11 years, incorporates various issues that the authors have addressed informally since the 10th edition was published in 2000. For example, the chapter on disciplinary procedures has been fleshed out so that it has become a practical rather than a theoretical guide, and new provisions have been added about electronic notice and about participation in meetings by phone or by internet connection. (There are still quite a few archaisms, though: the presiding officer is still referred to as "he," while the secretary is "he or she." And the arcane and archaic motion to "reconsider and enter on the minutes" is still around.) This edition is being released in conjunction with the new (2d) edition of the shorter and more user-friendly "Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised in Brief," an authoritative abridgment that will serve as an adequate alternative for users who don't need the full 669-page version.

Robert's is not necessarily the best parliamentary manual on the market: "Modern Parliamentary Procedure" by Ray Keesey is far more logical and user-friendly, and "The Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure" by Alice Sturgis (commissioned by the American Institute of Parliamentarians as a contemporary alternative to Robert's) is more readable and more rooted in modern practice. But no other book has gained as much as a toehold in Robert's dominance in the market. If you are interested in parliamentary procedure, or figuring out how most organizations work in the 21st-century United States, this Robert's is indispensable.

Buy This! It's Very Helpful!

After attending meetings the past 30 years through the schools and church that are supposed to follow Roberts Rules, I finally decided to purchase THE OFFICIAL up to date Roberts Rules complete edition.

Do not buy books that are a commentary, summary, "cliff notes," or "dummy" versions of Roberts Rules. Go to the source and this is it!

Get out a pen or highlighter as you read noteworthy sections for your meetings.

This is not boring and you can skim the less important sections relevant to your meetings.

My take away for Roberts Rules is not to know them to be the expert at meetings on parliamentary procedure or to know rules for the sake or rules, but on how to keep meetings moving and treat all participants with respect. Not a bad lesson for all of us!

Finally purchase the hardcover edition so you can pass this on to the presidents of your organizations.

The standard reference for running organizations

Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised (RONR) is THE authority for running meetings. The current version (11th ed.) is the parliamentary authority specified by most civic associations, clubs, non-profits, churches, political parties, and even corporations to be used in running their meetings. Other works titled "Robert's" are out there, based on previous editions that are no longer protected by copyright. Those should be avoided.

The whole point of having a standard set of rules, which Gen. Robert appreciated from the start, is that the process of making decisions is quite similar no matter what the purpose of the organization. Knowing just a bit about Robert's Rules, you can move from one organization to another, even in different parts of the country, and be confident in participating in the decision-making of a group you have just joined.

Now, the full Rules are quite complex, and most of the details about precedence and priority will seldom if ever arise in a typical meeting. The complexity arises from situations that have come about, which have engendered a logical extension of the Rules into new provisions, and they are there if needed. In my decades of experience participating in a number of groups, I can't recall any time we had more than four motions pending -- let's say, a Main Motion, Amendment, Secondary Amendment, then a Point of Order.

In addition to explaining all the various motions, Robert's contains a wealth of information on running different kinds of meetings, conventions, boards, writing bylaws, agendas. minutes, running elections, duties of officers, on and on.

My only quibble, and the reason for not giving it five stars, is that the current edition does not reflect the recent expansion of interest in various election methods (Condorcet methods, Single Transferable Vote, etc.) which provide a better reflection of the will of an assembly than simple plurality voting. RONR 11 does spend a few pages on these issues, but for my purposes not quite enough. This may simply be my own interests, and not a valid criticism of the work itself, which is, again, invaluable and without peer.

Way beyond Creepy!

Dark Places was an extremely disturbing thriller. The author did an excellent job portraying the mind of a killer. A little too much. I had an extremely hard time handling the detailed torturing of animals or twisted mind of this suspect. I usually enjoy a good thriller/mystery but this one was a little too creepy for me. I do not recommend this book to anyone who has a fear of creepy crawlies, such as spiders, scorpions and snakes. It might be too difficult to read through. I had a hard time with it myself, but worked through it in order to give a fair review.

The characters were well developed and when the story was focused more on the mystery at hand rather than the killer's background, it was easy to follow and fairly suspenseful.

My only complaints were that it never really climaxed. The plot never twisted making it rather bland in some ways. The reveal was pretty obvious even though there were several characters that could have created more of a shock factor and warranted a better rating on my part. I know my rating is pretty low compared to the others, but I have a certain criteria and it just fell short in my book. I like a novel to have suspense throughout. I like when you think you know what is going to happen only to be thrown a loop that takes the plot a whole different direction keeping the reader continually guessing. I also want a climactic reveal of the killer and if the author manages to stump me that is an automatic five stars in my opinion. This is how I rate books. It may not be comparable to anyone else's but I just wanted to verify why I only gave this book 3 stars. I actually wanted to give 3 and 1/2 but I couldn't push it to 4 stars. Others will disagree with my rating.

Is it worth buying?
That is all up to the reader. Be prepared for a serious THRILLER, and I'm not talking about Steven King. This is like Silence of the Lambs creepy, but using puppies and children. Some people are extremely turned off by that kind of torture. If you don't have a weak stomach and enjoy a twister serial killer story than you would probably enjoy this book. It does have some good suspense to it, but if you are the type who easily guesses who done it, than you will figure this one out too with no problem. If you are really curious, I recommend checking it out from the library rather than spending money on something that may turn you off within the first few chapters. Others may disagree. I'm just giving my opinion.

They're no angels!

This aptly titled novel takes the reader inside the darkness of two friends who style themselves angels, archangels, agents of the divine. But there is nothing of light to the twisted way they think or act.

The parts of the book I was most caught up in were the chapters exploring the relationship between the two, the way the older mesmerized the younger into callous acts of cruelty. The storyline is woven around these glimpses into Gabriel and Uriel's sociopathic behavior, which involves assorted spiders, snakes, scorpions, frog sweat, and, you get the drift. The fact that the really creepy action takes place in dank caves and cobweb covered passages adds to the ick-factor.

The detective and her wealthy guy are reminiscent of Eve Dallas and Roark, but that's not a bad thing. She works through the mess and mayhem, with the reader cheering her on.
