From Publishers Weekly
Jewelry and fashion designer BillyBoy,* whose Barbie collection totals 11,000 dolls with original outfits by the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, demonstrates how the plastic toy reflects the changes of the last quarter of a decade in American standards of feminine beauty, fashion, social values, and political and cultural trends. Barbie, the embodiment of the American dream, was launched in 1959, and early products included lingerie, which combined high-fashion styling and romantic innocence, a baby-blue taffeta pillbox hat, reminiscent of Jacqueline Kennedy, a wedding gown, cookbook and dream house. Over the next two decades, Barbie would go from astronaut to aerobics aficionado and graduate from nurse to physician. She and her many friends would spawn black, Hispanic and Oriental versions. Replete with color illustrations and references to Barbie magazines, novels and board games, this rich reservoir of "Barbiemania" will spirit many delighted readers down memory lane. However, some feminists will be piqued: BillyBoy* insists that Barbie was recently "used as a scapegoat" by a clinical psychologist who claimed many women suffer mentally and physically while trying to achieve a "Barbie-like figure."

The Martian, by Andy Weir

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

8 Tips for Surviving on Mars from Andy Weir

So you want to live on Mars. Perhaps it’s the rugged terrain, beautiful scenery, or vast natural landscape that appeals to you. Or maybe you’re just a lunatic who wants to survive in a lifeless barren wasteland. Whatever your reasons, there are a few things you should know:

1: You’re going to need a pressure vessel.

Mars’s atmospheric pressure is less than one percent of Earth’s. So basically, it’s nothing. Being on the surface of Mars is almost the same as being in deep space. You better bring a nice, sturdy container to hold air in. By the way, this will be your home forever. So try to make it as big as you can.

2: You’re going to need oxygen.

You probably plan to breathe during your stay, so you’ll need to have something in that pressure vessel. Fortunately, you can get this from Mars itself. The atmosphere is very thin, but it is present and it’s almost entirely carbon dioxide. There are lots of ways to strip the carbon off carbon dioxide and liberate the oxygen. You could have complex mechanical oxygenators or you could just grow some plants.

3: You’re going to need radiation shielding.

Earth’s liquid core gives it a magnetic field that protects us from most of the nasty crap the sun pukes out at us. Mars has no such luxury. All kinds of solar radiation gets to the surface. Unless you’re a fan of cancer, you’re going to want your accommodations to be radiation-shielded. The easiest way to do that is to bury your base in Martian sand and rocks. They’re not exactly in short supply, so you can just make the pile deeper and deeper until it’s blocking enough.

4: You’re going to need water.

Again, Mars provides. The Curiosity probe recently discovered that Martian soil has quite a lot of ice in it. About 35 liters per cubic meter. All you need to do is scoop it up, heat it, and strain out the water. Once you have a good supply, a simple distillery will allow you to reuse it over and over.

5: You’re going to need food.

Just eat Martians. They taste like chicken.

6: Oh, come on.

All right, all right. Food is the one thing you need that can’t be found in abundance on Mars. You’ll have to grow it yourself. But you’re in luck, because Mars is actually a decent place for a greenhouse. The day/night cycle is almost identical to Earth’s, which Earth plants evolved to optimize for. And the total solar energy hitting the surface is enough for their needs.

But you can’t just grow plants on the freezing, near-vacuum surface. You’ll need a pressure container for them as well. And that one might have to be pretty big. Just think of how much food you eat in a year and imagine how much space it takes to grow it.

Hope you like potatoes. They’re the best calorie yield per land area.

7: You’re going to need energy.

However you set things up, it won’t be a self-contained system. Among other things, you’ll need to deal with heating your home and greenhouse. Mars’s average daily temperature is -50C (-58F), so it’ll be a continual energy drain to keep warm. Not to mention the other life support systems, most notably your oxygenator. And if you’re thinking your greenhouse will keep the atmosphere in balance, think again. A biosphere is far too risky on this scale.

8: You’re going to need a reason to be there.

Why go out of your way to risk your life? Do you want to study the planet itself? Start your own civilization? Exploit local resources for profit? Make a base with a big death ray so you can address the UN while wearing an ominous mask and demand ransom? Whatever your goal is, you better have it pretty well defined, and you better really mean it. Because in the end, Mars is a harsh, dangerous place and if something goes wrong you’ll have no hope of rescue. Whatever your reason is, it better be worth it.

From Booklist
Remember Man Plus, Frederik Pohl’s award-winning 1976 novel about a cyborg astronaut who’s sent, alone, to Mars? Imagine, instead, that the astronaut was just a regular guy, part of a team sent to the red planet, and that, through a series of tragic events, he’s left behind, stranded and facing certain death. That’s the premise of this gripping and (given its subject matter) startlingly plausible novel. The story is told mostly through the log entries of astronaut Mark Watney, chronicling his efforts to survive: making the prefab habitat livable and finding a way to grow food, make water, and get himself off the planet. Interspersed among the log entries are sections told from the point of view of the NASA specialists, back on Earth, who discover that Watney is not dead (as everyone assumed) and scramble together a rescue plan. There are some inevitable similarities between the book and the 1964 movie Robinson Crusoe on Mars, but where the movie was a broad sci-fi adventure, the novel is a tightly constructed and completely believable story of a man’s ingenuity and strength in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Riveting. --David Pitt

I'm a hard-science science fiction fan and would rather read hard sc-fi than almost anything. I love stories and movies about Mars, and I'm a fan of survival, castaway, and man-against-the elements stories. I loved Robinson Crusoe, so it should not surprise you that I loved the movie, Robinson Crusoe on Mars. I realize it's not Academy Award material, but to me, it's everything I want it to be, as was this book, The Martian.

The main character, Watney, presumed dead, is accidentally left by his crew mates when an intense Martian dust storm forces them to abort their mission. What follows for part of the book is a logbook style narrative that describes in great technical detail Watney's efforts to extend his life until the next scheduled mission arrives in 4 years. After reading just the first 20% of the book (my Kindle has no page numbers) one can't help but be impressed by the author's depth of knowledge in this regard. In fact, the entire book is an astronaut's primer on extraterrestrial and deep space survival and rescue.

The Martian isn't without its typos and editorial glitches, and I'm not sure if this was a result of a bad Kindle conversion or just a shortsighted editor. For me, though, typos and editing issues paled in comparison to the snowballing storyline, which I gladly admit is not for everyone.

This is not a touchy-feely book about love, romance or relationships. There is no overpowering angle between characters. No good guys in white hats and bad guys in black hats. There's no room for cliches. It's all very business like and scientific. So, if you're looking for Twilight in Space. Or Fifty Shades of Mars. Or Tom Hanks making himself a friend by drawing a face on a soccer ball, you'll probably want to skip this one. This book is simply about the mission, and the cold reality of working hard to turn a wrong into a right.

Another thing you won't find in this book is a lot of heartfelt reminiscing or reflection. There are no flashbacks of our main character fishing with Dad at the old water hole, or him riding his first bicycle without training wheels. This is a book about a guy with a keen intellect surviving on a hostile planet and doing so by making the most out of a given set of resources.

About a third of the way through the book, the author adds third person narratives from mission control and the Hermes space craft, the latter manned by the crew that left our hero behind -- and make no mistake, hero is the operative word. Again, we don't follow our mission control cast of characters back too their respective homes and meet their wives and husbands and get served up cliche insights into their innermost thoughts. Blech! I hate those stories! Which doesn't mean these characters are cookie cutter or superficial. On the contrary, I found the characters sufficiently individuated and interesting.

I highly recommend this book to people who are into reading hard sci-fi of the not-too-distant future, sci-fi without blasters and ray guns or 9' tall aliens that bleed acid. (Btw, I like those stories, too, but good ones are hard to find.)

Somebody did their homework on this one -- and that's what stands out above all else.

Who needs nail clippers?
By Mr. Joe
"I'm stranded on Mars. I have no way to communicate with Hermes or Earth. Everyone thinks I'm dead. I'm in a Hab designed to last 31 days. If the Oxygenator breaks down, I'll suffocate. If the Water Reclaimer breaks down, I'll die of thirst. If the Hab breaches, I'll just kind of explode. If none of those things happen, I'll eventually run out of food and starve to death. So yeah. I'm f----d." - Mark Watney

As the two-hundred thirty-fourth reader to review THE MARTIAN by Andy Weir, I have no illusion that I can add anything substantive to the plaudits already heaped on this intelligent work of space sci-fi. Simply put, it's a nail-biter that'll trim your finger nail plates down even with the nail beds.

My reading tastes usually don't encompass space fiction because the vast majority of it seems to fall within the realm of extreme fantasy with worlds and ETs of the most fantastical sorts. I prefer my off-Earth stories to have some plausible connection with realistic, albeit extrapolated, technology and situations, and the one book that remains embedded in my memory as simply terrific is from all the way back in 1975 when I was much younger and perhaps more impressionable - Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama. With films, I'm the same way; Outland and Silent Running come to mind. THE MARTIAN is my kind of SF.

In Mars mission engineer-botanist Mark Watney we have a thinking man's hero for the ages, and THE MARTIAN is a story that cries out to be serialized for television.

THE MARTIAN would be ideal for a lengthy trans-ocean plane flight. If you start the book on take-off, you'll likely finish on landing and not even be aware of the hours that passed or the screaming kid a couple of rows back.

You owe yourself this novel. Trust me.

Abandoned on Mars
By Ian J. Miller
A futuristic Robinson Crusoe! Due to a dust storm, Mark Watney is left for dead in the Acidalia region of Mars when the Ares 3 mission is aborted 6 days into the scheduled two months. What follows is largely a logbook of living in a large tent or a small rover for about 550 days on what was supposed to be two month's rations for 6 people. Fortunately there were some potatoes for thanksgiving that were alive, so Mark starts dividing them and growing them. But first he has to make soil, and then water, and so on. Generally speaking, a logbook is a poor technique, but here it is brilliant. You cannot have conversation, and you cannot develop other characters, but did I mention he was abandoned? Alone? You might still think that 550 days stuck in a tent or rover could get boring, but no, this book is absolutely gripping.

Watney was resourceful, and the book is very good at showing the scientific approach to problems, putting numbers to them, and showing what happens if you do what, so in a sense it is also a book of puzzles: this has gone wrong, how can it be fixed? Tension is maintained well because Watney has an unseen companion: Murphy. If it can go wrong, it does, sometimes because of Watney's own lack of knowledge. To make water, first he makes hydrogen. This is not a good idea, and Watney finds out why. Because I have also written a book centred on Mars, I know the author has really spent a lot of time understanding the nature of Mars, and this book shows quite well what being on the surface of Mars would be like. There is the odd error, probably intentional for effect, for example the effects of the dust storm are too great. Martian winds can hit up to 200 k/h, but gas pressures are about 1% of Earth's, so, after correcting for the lower gravitational acceleration and the mass of dust, the forces will still be only a few percent of those of comparable wind velocities on Earth. That, however, is forgiven, because if the author were strictly correct on this, then there would be no story.

To summarize, this is a surprisingly gripping story of survival against all the odds, and I strongly recommend it.

Ian Miller, author of Red Gold.

Better But Not Well: Mental Health Policy in the United States since 1950, by Richard G. Frank, Sherry A. Glied

The past half-century has been marked by major changes in the treatment of mental illness: important advances in understanding mental illnesses, increases in spending on mental health care and support of people with mental illnesses, and the availability of new medications that are easier for the patient to tolerate. Although these changes have made things better for those who have mental illness, they are not quite enough.

In Better But Not Well, Richard G. Frank and Sherry A. Glied examine the well-being of people with mental illness in the United States over the past fifty years, addressing issues such as economics, treatment, standards of living, rights, and stigma. Marshaling a range of new empirical evidence, they first argue that people with mental illness―severe and persistent disorders as well as less serious mental health conditions―are faring better today than in the past. Improvements have come about for unheralded and unexpected reasons. Rather than being a result of more effective mental health treatments, progress has come from the growth of private health insurance and of mainstream social programs―such as Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, housing vouchers, and food stamps―and the development of new treatments that are easier for patients to tolerate and for physicians to manage.

The authors remind us that, despite the progress that has been made, this disadvantaged group remains worse off than most others in society. The "mainstreaming" of persons with mental illness has left a policy void, where governmental institutions responsible for meeting the needs of mental health patients lack resources and programmatic authority. To fill this void, Frank and Glied suggest that institutional resources be applied systematically and routinely to examine and address how federal and state programs affect the well-being of people with mental illness.

Offers many insights beneficial to the informed reader.

The authors are true to their word in providing an excellent overview of changes in the last 50 years. They provide compelling evidence that the condition of many, if not most, persons with mental illness has improved during that period.

(JAMA)

By pulling information from a wide variety of sources, these authors provide a fresh and optimistic look on improvements in the well-being of people with mental illness. A major contribution to the field.

An important and provocative addition to the literature dealing with health policy.

(Gerald N. Grob, Ph.D., Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research, Rutgers University, author of The Deadly Truth)

Professors Frank and Glied offer a broad-based and candid assessment of the evolution of mental health care in the United States and of how the well-being of people touched by mental health problems changed during the last half of the twentieth century.

(Rosalynn Carter, from the Foreword)

Will be of greatest interest to students of mental health economics, services, and policy, but clinicians interested in the relationship between health policy and everyday practice will also find it useful.

(Burton V. Reifler International Psychogeriatrics)

Provides a necessary counterpart to much overenthusiastic optimism surrounding recent development in psychopharmacology and the neurosciences.

(Bonnie Evans Journal of Mental Health)

Offers a fascinating... historical analysis of mental health policy.

(Ellen Dwyer History of Psychiatry)

Should be assigned to every practitioner, mental health clinician, administrator, and advocate ― as well as every legislator and policy maker―concerned with the status of Americans with serious mental illness.

If one... has time to read one book on mental health policy this year, this should be the one.

(Roger Meyer Health Affairs)

A comprehensive assessment of changes in the life conditions and well-being of persons with serious mental illnesses over the past five decades.

A cut and dry policy book
By Mathew Knudson
It's a relatively unbiased view of the evolution of mental health policy in the US, and it covers most of the key points, from availability and structure of care to the costs and financing, as well as quality of care. There's also some minor discussion of rights and social stigma based on survey data. However, it buys into the mainstream narrative of psychiatry, which is very positive toward the field, which is challenge by a lot of new research, as well as books such as "American Psychosis". This book is a great start, but you should probably couple it with a few other readings if you really want a comprehensive understanding of what's happened.

Mental Health Policy Book
By Professor
Provides a good historical overview of the mental health system. Details the rise and fall of various therapies and gaps
in the system.

Purchase this book with the recognition that its value is in its historical / policy approach of the subject. Some of the
commentary on pharmacology is dated - example, tricyclics being noted as first line therapy for depression.

Excellent overview
By Kevin
I found the coverage of factors that have impacted mental health care in the US very comprehensive and authoritative. The authors are clearly thoughtful about the complexities, including the philosophical and sociological perspectives at play, and extremely knowledgeable about the pragmatic details of policy development and implementation. An excellent work!

Japanese Swords: Cultural Icons of a Nation; The History, Metallurgy and Iconography of the Samurai Sword, by Colin M. Roach

With over 300 stunning photographs and woodblock prints along with extensive historical and cultural commentary, Japanese Swords is the ultimate authority on Samurai weaponry.

Historically, Japanese warriors considered their swords to be far greater than simple weaponry. Their swords were both lethal tools and divine companions — social and religious icons. Traditionally worn by the samurai as a sign of social status, the Japanese sword represented the junction between the reigning military class and those whom they ruled. Moreover, the samurai sword was a technological and artistic marvel. Many scholars consider it to be the finest sword ever constructed.

In terms of symbolism and historical importance, no other blade comes close to the Japanese sword. With a historical, iconographical, and technological perspective, author Cohn M. Roach provides an in-depth study of these magnificent weapons in Japanese Swords. This richly illustrated sword book weaves the blade's primary influences together, tracking its history and illuminating its progress from infancy to grandeur. By studying the evolution of the Japanese sword from this perspective, we better understand Japan and its warrior archetype.

Combining research materials from multiple disciplines, Roach uses his expertise as an educator to guide readers through the sword's rise to greatness in a unique way. This book discusses the history, development, and spiritual symbolism of the sword, as well as the esoteric metallurgical techniques used in making it. It also covers the difficult training practices used by skilled swordsmen.

Japanese Swords also includes a companion DVD featuring a beautifully-filmed documentary that explores the traditional swordmaker's craft. The DVD also contains an introduction to the Japanese sword at a sword shop in Kyoto and a visit to a dojo for a beginner's class in the medieval sword-drawing art called iaido.

From Publishers Weekly
Roach, a student of both iaido and aikido and a dedicated sword-enthusiast, passionately dissects the symbolic essence of the sword throughout history, emphasizing changes in social significance, technological influence, and iconography. The erudite prose is ameliorated by design, modern swordsmanship, traditional artwork, illustrative photos, and etiquette. Historical periods are elegantly punctuated with ornate depictions, highlighting shifts in katana design and value from early periods to the current interpretation of ancient disciplines. Roach's own deep-rooted interest and involvement in the subject ensures a seamless blend of historical and religious themes, as well as much "sword appreciation" (the author champions his comrades in promoting traditional craftsmanship and confronts the contemporary dilemma of commercial fraud and shameless profiteering). In order to truly understand the Japanese sword in its entirety one must, Roach suggests, appreciate the "unique sociological, spiritual, and metallurgical environment in which it evolved." With this at the core of his book, he vividly tracks the fundamental transition from the sword as a mythological instrument to a functional tool for war, and finally to the display art commodity it is today.

Japanese Swords: Cultural Icons of a Nation
By Christopher R Ross
This book is a phenomenal compilation of information via literature, photographs and a compact disk. The information succinctly explains the cultural etiology of the Samurai Sword (Nihonto), its historical religious significance, and its relationship, influence and integration into modern Japanese society.

The chapters are well categorized in a logical sequence that detail the cultural and religious lore associated with the genesis of the traditional steel used for a sword's production (tamahagane); historically, the manifest martial need, events and evolution that created the world-renowned Samurai Sword; the various methods of craftsmanship, technique and skill employed in a blade's production which, fantastically, have resulted in a cultural heritage integrated into a modern society and industry; the historical periods of the Samurai Sword and their distinguishing characteristics and features; the transition and transmutation of the Sword into an artistic and cultural icon; the modern craftsman who continue the cultural heritage of Samurai Sword and the its impact on the modern world.

The book smartly utilizes a variety of photographs that effectively illustrate technical explanations. The illustrations provide a clear understanding of the subject matter. And the book serves well to dispel common myths and misunderstandings about the Samurai Sword. I would highly recommend the book for the connoisseur, aficionado, and the novice alike who appreciate the Samurai Sword and seek a continuing education on the subject.

Excellent Content but Lots of Typos
By Thomas Raven
As others have mentioned, the component parts of this work are all excellent. From the photography to the in-depth analysis of Japanese sword making and the sword's place in Japanese culture, everything is well done. So why couldn't the publisher be troubled to actually proofread the book?

It's astonishing to me that such a high quality work can be eroded by the carelessness of a publisher. On a single reading I found so many typos that they became a distraction from the content. I feel that this particular edition (I bought the hardcover) was given short shrift by Tuttle. That's a real tragedy considering the subject matter and the obvious care the author put into this work.

The accompanying DVD provides some good "extras" similar to those found on movie releases. They left me wanting to see even more.

A GREAT BOOK.
By Svein Magnussen
This is a beautiful book. I love just looking into it. Then reading about the history and background of this art is amazing.
The work and love of sword craft is very special. The author has a great knowledge of what he's writing about.
I never thought it could fetch my interest as it did.
I really recommend this book. Just put it on your table and go back into it from time to time.
Being a Norwegian it's very exotic to read about a far away culture such as the japanese...
I just had some knowledge about Samurais and their swords...I guess that's why this book caught my attention.
I'm glad i bought it.

A Good Beginner's Stamp Album
By Fearless 9
I think the other reviewers are way off base here. This is a fine beginner's stamp album, the kind that has introduced new generations to the hobby for years. In answer to "W D'souza", the value of the stamp is not destroyed once you stick it to the album if you use a common stamp hinge. You can purchase 1000 hinges for a couple bucks anywhere. In answer to "K Clausen", the cover of the album says "pictures of stamps from all over the world", so you should not have been surprised that it was international. Finally, to "Ct Yankee" and "sometimes", who complained that the album is not hardcover and that the pictures are in black and white, what do you expect for $6.95? Granted, I would have preferred a larger, sturdier album for around $20, but I don't see one on the market.

Excellent beginner's album
By ClayM
My three girls (6-year-old twins and a 4 1/2 year old) each received one for Christmas as a gift from their aunt.

This is an excellent beginner's stamp album. There is ample room for a variety of stamps from all over the world. Quite a number of illustrated stamps and plenty of blank spaces for stamps that are not illustrated.

A bag of hinges and a patient daddy, and the girls have hours of fun and entertainment as they start their stamp collecting journey.

I've read some of the negative reviews, and to be honest, they make me wonder if they know what a stamp album actually is. The description is accurate, the price is fair, and this is quite good for a beginning collector.

There Is No Method for Perfect Pitch
By Pete
I was really, really excited to get this book. I'm a guitarist with a master's degree in jazz and ear training has always been a huge part of my musicianship. I teach it at the college course level and always profess its importance to the well rounded musician. With perfect pitch being the natural phenomenon that it is, I was really interested in how the author was going to approach teaching it...and that ended up being the catch right there: having perfect pitch is referred to as a natural phenomenon for a reason...it exists naturally. You CANNOT teach perfect pitch. You CANNOT learn perfect pitch. However, you CAN learn relative pitch, and that's exactly what this book is aimed to help with. The author seems to be a guy who knows his stuff, and oddly enough, he very accurately explains the difference between relative and perfect pitch...then goes on to claim that his method will help you learn how to posses perfect pitch.

Unfortunately, the method used here is just really poor. To start, you're asked to listen to several audio tracks, each being a piano playing a single note over and over again several times. You're supposed to "digest" the note and describe its sound with a list of adjectives...and then do the same thing for every single other note. So the reader is expected to be able to listen to a note and hear qualities in it to the extent that they're able to distinguish it from any other note...when I went through the book and realized that this was the foundation of the author's method to obtain perfect pitch, I was so upset. Think about this...let's say you hear somebody sing a C natural and you describe it by saying something like "that note is round, hollow sounding, etc, etc, etc,"...then you hear that person sing a C#...are you going to hear a completely different set of qualities to describe it and distinguish it from the C natural? And then hear a different set of qualities for each of the remaining 10 notes? And then be able to instantly recall those same exact qualities for a given note every single time you heard it? Of course not! I love advanced ear training techniques as much as anybody, but aside from those gifted with perfect pitch, I just do not believe that readers will be able to distinguish one note from any other note by recalling a verbal description. And even so, if this were to somehow work, it isn't perfect pitch...it would be a form of relative pitch - you're naming the note based on having practiced how to relate it to certain qualities.

Bottom line: Perfect pitch cannot be taught through any kind of method, and this book is no exception. However, it does teach certain aspects of relative pitch and it has some good listening exercises. It covers how to hear and identify the 12 chromatic simple intervals, which is an essential skill for musicians. I would absolutely not recommend this book to advanced musicians with previous ear training experience.

If you really want to develope a great ear, this course is not for you.
By joseph androsky
No included instructions or dialog on the CD's, just tones played, I was really disappointed. I don't believe you should need a book with the answers for reference, you should be able to listen for the answers on the included CD's. The ear learns from listening, not reading. If you are serious about ear training I would purchase The Perfect Pitch Ear Training SuperCourse by David Lucas Burge. This ear training course consists of clear verbal instruction with musical examples that open the ear naturally. I am a serious musician that has chosen to expand my understanding of music and improve my ear, so I do not recommend the Hal Leonard Perfect Pitch Method.

Why This New Race: Ethnic Reasoning in Early Christianity, by D. Buell

Why This New Race offers a radical new way of thinking about the origins of Christian identity. Conventional histories have understood Christianity as a religion that from its beginnings sought to transcend ethnic and racial distinctions. Denise Kimber Buell challenges this view by revealing the centrality of ethnicity and race in early definitions of Christianity. Buell's readings of various texts consider the use of "ethnic reasoning" to depict Christianness as more than a set of shared religious practices and beliefs. By asking themselves, "Why this new race?" Christians positioned themselves as members of an ethnos or genos distinct from Jews, Romans, and Greeks.

Buell focuses on texts written before Christianity became legal in 313 C.E., including Greek apologetic treatises, martyr narratives, and works by Clement of Alexandria, Origen, and Tertullian. Philosophers and theologians used ethnic reasoning to define Christians as a distinct people within classical and ancient Near East society and in intra-Christian debates about what constituted Christianness. Many characterized Christianness as both fixed and fluid-it had a real essence (fixed) but could be acquired through conversion (fluid). Buell demonstrates how this dynamic view of race and ethnicity allowed Christians to establish boundaries around the meaning of Christianness and to develop universalizing claims that all should join the Christian people.

In addressing questions of historiography, Buell analyzes why generations of scholars have refused to acknowledge ethnic reasoning in early Christian discourses. Moreover, Buell's arguments about the importance of ethnicity and religion in early Christianity provide insights into the historical legacy of Christian anti-Semitism as well as contemporary issues of race.

Review

Why This New Race is a superbly researched, elegantly written, and honestly and courageously argued book. It is usually enough in the western academy and beyond to disturb the peace with the invocation of 'race.' It is also usually enough to rattle and unsettle many by seeking to problematize 'early Christianity.' Buell's sensitive effort to explain 'early' (masking anxiety over ongoing contemporary) Christianity in terms of complex social collectives, including those the ancients (and moderns) call 'races' and 'ethnic groups,' will surely disturb the peace and haunt the discourses. Not a moment too soon!

(Vincent L. Wimbush, Claremont Graduate University, author of The Bible and African Americans: A Brief History)

Why This New Race is a stunning contribution to the history of Christianity. Buell masterfully demonstrates how ethnic reasoning permeates early Christian theology and identity formation. She shows how Christian claims to universalism did not exclude particularistic claims to peoplehood which set boundaries between insiders and outsiders, orthodox and heretics. A must-read for anyone interested in the problematic intersections of Christianity, race, and religion in antiquity and the modern world.

(Karen King, Harvard Divinity School, Harvard University, author of What Is Gnosticism?)

Professor Buell's work is a fascinating exploration of the beginnings of Christian conceptions of race and ethnicity and serves as an unique reminder how ancient constructions affect our understanding of each other today.

Ethnicity and Race in First Century Christianity
By Michael A. Smith
Buell is without a doubt a good scholar and her thesis is both interesting and provocative. The major problem with this book is the writing. I can attribute the problems in reading and understanding to a decisive postmodern penchant for words, with little concern for meaning. In fact, the author gives no definitions, and the reader is forced to engage in a lot of skillful mining of the material to find the kernel of truth hidden away. I cannot help but give an example of what I mean.

"The conceptualization that I have adopted in this book of race and ethnicity as being characterized by both fixity and fluidity suits the prismatic approach because it highlights the shape-shifting instantiations of these complexly interrelated concepts without insisting that they have any intrinsic essence." (p. 168).

In the end the question is one of consistency and clarity. While she makes every effort to dissolve boundaries, many of the examples she uses, like Martyr and others, do their best to erect boundaries, and very clearly define both Jews and Christians in racial and ethnic terms. Her answer it to reject a metaphorical reading of those who disagree. After such a wordy and detailed treatment the reader is left wondering if her effort was worth the time and expense.
