VERY INTERESTING!!!

The book is a bit wordy, as film books tend to be. It is probably written at a masters level but very accessible to undergraduates who are interested. The author successfully took on the gihugic task of explaining the ins and outs of the indigenous film industry in Latin America to readers who would know nothing of the culture and values of the various people groups nor the challenges they face. I especially like how thoroughly versed in the subject Freya Schiwy appears to be, to the point of adding little anecdotal tidbits of personal experience along the way to help develop understanding. Both non-fictional and fictional films are covered. The book is more about the indigenous film industry as a whole than it is an in depth study of individual works although about 6 short films are dissected in depth to help understand characteristics.

I LOVED THE BOOK, but I'm also a film student with a particular interest in Latin America.

Volume 2 of Make's "ReMaking History" series offers readers another skillful blending of history, scientific and mathematical principles, plus do-it-yourself projects that help demonstrate the spirit of discovery.

"The projects in this book," William Gurstelle explains, " were inspired by inventions of the time period from about 1700 to 1875, a period often known as the Industrial Revolution....." It was a time, he adds, when people began to "use machines instead of human labor to make lots stuff more cheaply, and doing so would be the way of the future."

Some of the DIY projects in this book are more difficult than others, and none of them appear appropriate for young children unless they are closely supervised by adults who are competent with tools. Middle schoolers and high schoolers should be supervised, as well, since some of the projects involve flames, corrosive chemicals, drills and other tools.

Some of the book's projects include: copper-plating a small metal sign; fireproofing some pieces of cloth and wood; creating a Chinese (or differential) windlass for lifting heavy weights with a simple crank and not much force; and making a static electricity generator, plus a Leydon jar similar to the one Benjamin Franklin used to prove that lightning was electricity and not something supernatural, "the work of demons."

Other projects include making a homemade electric arc lamp (powered by a battery and not a wall socket!), making a vacuum pump, making a tuning fork, and making vulcanized rubber erasers.

Gurstelle's book is well illustrated with photographs, drawings and other graphics. And his text is nicely written and easily accessible. While keeping his explanations short and to the point, he offers engaging details about the history, people, and beneficial accidents or encounters that enabled the discoveries to occur and be exploited for progress.

Good book. The first person to write a book on this subject?

This 1901 book by Bernarr MacFadden may be the first or one of the first Natural Eyesight Improvement books.

Good book, much beneficial training. I like the poetry and how he describes emotions, thoughts, communication transferred by the eyes alone. How experienced police officers obtain the ability to detect a criminal personality by a certain look all of them have in their eyes.

Some areas of the book needed improvement. This is NOT Bernarr's fault. It is the fault of the medical, optical profession who hid the true function of the eyes, vision and natural cures without glasses.

Some things in the book I do not recommend applying but the book is a must have addition to the natural eyesight improvement collection. Way back in 1901 natural health teachers knew that eyeglasses caused addiction to stronger and stronger prescriptions, more vision impairment, eye disease.

In later years Mr. MacFadden wrote a new book with many changes, improvements;

The 1918, 1924-1925 book editions of 'STRENGTHENING THE EYES - A New Course in Scientific Eye Training in 28 Lessons' is a result of Bernarr MacFadden meeting and studying Ophthalmologist William H. Bates practice of Natural Eyesight Improvement. They advertised natural eyesight training, The Bates Method together in newspapers, magazines.
Dr. Bates name was on the 1918-, possibly 1925 book as author with MacFadden. Later book editions were authored only by MacFadden. Did Dr. Bates want to change some of the practices in the book? (Modern teachers have changed, corrected, added some practices) Or maybe he preferred to place all his attention on his solo projects; book, magazine, medical papers, clinic work.

Bernarr MacFadden was one of the first Natural Health, Physical Fitness teachers. Sadly, he died in 1955 from a urinary tract infection after refusing standard medical doctor's treatment.

MacFadden published Physical Culture Magazine; A fitness, natural health, food, body building magazine. In this magazine and other newspapers... Ophthalmologist William H. Bates and Bernarr MacFadden advertised their 'Strengthening the Eyes' course and book. This seems to have started the Natural Eyesight (Vision) Improvement revolution.

Many people have improved their vision with the Bates Method. It is hidden by the medical community due to its success, competition; prevents the need for eyeglasses, surgery, lasik... drugs.

(The Bates Method works if the patient will take the time to learn and apply it. A large portion of the population seem to prefer eyeglasses or surgery; a quick fix with no work, no study. But glasses, contacts, surgery are addictive, maintain and increase eye-vision problems, cataract, detached retina, glaucoma... Only a few honest eye doctors will tell you this truth.)

In addition, gendered performances by the first female actors participated in 'staging' the Mediterranean by using the female body as a canvas for cartographical imaginings. By focusing attention on the various communities involved in the making of theatre, a central preoccupation of the book is to question the dynamics of 'exchange' as it materialized within a spectrum inclusive of both cultural collaboration but also of taxation and coercion.

Workshop & book in one

I was so excited to see that the companion website for this book is live! I've watched a few of the videos (there are several!), Colin is such a wonderful teacher, you'll really get a lot out of the videos and the other teachings that go with this book. I also love Karen Taylor Good's music, and there are a few selections of hers available on the site as well. I feel like I won the "spiritual lottery", I know that this insightful book and the mini-classes that Colin is offering along with it will make a big difference in my life. His method for shifting your perspective about all your relationships (not just your partner) is mind-blowing in its simplicity, and it really works.

Has Lots to Offer

Was thrilled to get the latest book from Colin Tipping. I find his writing so helpful. This book has so much to offer - so many ways to access information - charts, worksheets, QR codes, music. It just goes on and on. BUT I must point out that since the printer of the book released it early - some of that fabulous info that I mentioned is not available yet. The QR codes and the access to the Expanding into Love website will NOT be available until April 1, 2013. It is just a matter of being patient and just reading the book and looking at charts and worksheets (which is a great deal) and then after April 1 - the fullness and richness of what Colin Tipping has to offer will be available. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up in case you ordered the book recently prior to the official April 1 release date.

A Heart Warming Book

I happen to think that Colin Tipping is one of the best writers of our times, especially in the 'field' of attaining higher consciousness, becoming more aware of 'who', and 'what' we really are... he makes all of his 'positions' and 'conclusions' of life very understandable, easy to read and follow.

Review of Peanut Butter Principles by Eric Franklin

"Peanut Butter Principles" by Eric Franklin is a very insightful and encouraging book. Mr. Franklin touches on some very good points on how to encourage children and others to reach their full potential. In Chapter 16, Mr. Franklin brings up his faith and points out something I, myself have learned, that, like the title of the chapter, "Faith Makes all Things Possible Not Easy", is very true. As the author points out, our journey to reach our full potential and to make our lives a success is not easy, but with hard work and perseverence it is possible. Mr. Franklin speaks about how to build up the child's self esteem when helping them. He mentions that they should think for themselves as opposed to giving the child the answers or completing a task for them. Mr. Franklin tells us the importance of persevering in our endeavors and not giving up so easily.

I agree with "Peanut Butter Principles" by Mr. Eric Franklin. Thank you sir, for a very enlightening book, which I, myself can take into account for my own life. I highly recommend "Peanut Butter Principles" by Eric Franklin for anyone, not just parents, teachers or mentors. It has some very excellent guidelines anyone can put to use in their lives. "Peanut Butter Principles" by Eric Franklin is most definitely 'my cup of tea'!!!

Very practical and insightful!

I just read this book after sending my last child out of the nest. I only wish I could have read it years ago...it would be a great motivator during those tough years. In thinking about my three kids, these are the three princlples that I have seen play out for them:

#10 The difference between a goal and a dream is a deadline.
#12 Talent and intellect does always add up to success. Perseverance does.
#20 Don't worry about what you don't know. Do what you know.

Timeless principles your grandparents taught your parents

Eric Franklin has written a truly useful book for instilling success oriented character traits in your children through 47 Leadership Lessons. In the preface he writes that he grew up 'solidly middle class' and it shows in his lessons. There's nothing here about attachment theory or evolutionary psychology. Instead he has chapters titled Life Is Not Fair. Get Over It, and Your Life Is Not a Rehearsal. My favorite is Everything Happens For A Reason, But Sometimes The Reason Is You're Stupid And You Make Poor Decisions. In five sections he walks readers through principles about self, talent, life lessons, relationships, and good choices. The text is breezy and to the point and Franklin draws widely from his own experiences.

Your grandparents probably took most of these lessons as self evident. You and your parents a little less so. Much of this will be entirely foreign to your children. But just like the new economy and new math we continue to learn that there is nothing new and that there are no short cuts to success and good character. Franklin gives an excellent path for parents and their children.

Hopefully parents will read it to each other as well.

Short and sour

So, you shouldn't attempt to write a novel till you're middle-aged? Kanehara wrote this when she was 21 and maybe it shows. The voice is authentic, the world is recognisably cold as it appears to 21 year olds and it feels very real. All too real. And this is the tale of a sado-masochistic love triangle, murder, cover-ups and body piercings. Not for the squeamish. But the prose is mean and lean and effective for its lack of backstory, or, truth be told, much of a plot. I can see why some folk hated it and others see it as a cult classic. It's a female Japanese Holden Cauldfield into body piercings. Not the kind of book I'd like to run through with my daughter, but apparently Kanehara's Dad edited her manuscript. And there is guile here, it's not chance that this won Japan's top literary prize. It presses all the right buttons -- body modification, the rise of the freeters (Japanese zero-hour workers) not to mention sexy, independent women, and youngsters dissatisfied with the status quo. Short but definitely not sweet.
