About the Author
Keith Cummings is a distinguished glass artist and retired head of the Glass Department at Wolverhampton University, U.K., where he remains Reader in Research Studies. Solid overview on kilnforming

I've got both this and the previous edition of Cumming's book in my collection. The author has plenty of hands-on experience and a broad knowledge of many glass techniques and processes. I wouldn't call this a hands-on, step-by-step tutorial in studio technique but it will certainly get you started.

Keith Cummings has produced a comprehensive book on the subject of kiln forming glass. It shows many aspects of the processes involved interspersed with examples of works from both the modern and ancient world. Glass, a most technical and demanding material both in resource use and exacting processes, is demystified by the clear text and illustrations. The reader will gain valuable knowledge as well as a new respect for ancient artists who worked glass to a very high level of expertise and beauty. With so few books on the subject of glass this one is at the top of the pile for "information gold" and with plenty of color photographs to show of some of the many beautiful results that can be achieved. Glass can be seen as a material that reflects the high points of human endeavor and the book shows the diverse areas through history where this has occurred in a well researched way. In general a mix of how to and a survey of what can and has been done with glass in the kiln forming universe. Part reference book and part special interest subject or simply if you were curious. I still dip into the pages to absorb more interesting facts.

Not what was ordered.

The book I received does not appear to be the same book that I ordered. It has the same author, but without being able to see into the book, just judging by the cover, it wasn't the same book. The book I received was quite good, although much of what was written was a rehash of a couple of other books on the same subject that I already have. Notwithstanding the forgoing I am not regretting adding it to my library.

Fun and interesting

Ok, so it's not a work of heavy scholarship (maybe see David Buss for that) or entirely a how-to-be-successful-at-love/sex/romance book -- Cabot's website is indeed pretty good for that, not that there are none of those helpful and practical pointers here. This is the kind of book you could give to your kid sister. And it glows with style (hint, hint...). I certainly think it's worth more than the measley two stars the other two reviewers gave.
The authors have surveyed the entire field of research in this extensive area and put together almost all the interesting little tidbits and theories into an enjoyable and easy-to-read format. Even someone who thinks they're not a beginner will be sure to learn some cool things here which will make them sound like an expert at their next social gathering. I really liked the tone of the book and its often layed-back, bemused approach to a topic which can often lead to furrowed brows and a grim outlook on things. You got interested in sex research because you thought it would be fun, didn't you? This book delivers. 4 1/2 stars.

Dissapointment

This book is good if you are looking for research on the topic of sexual attraction (there are some interresting facts to be learned) but it's lacking in practical advice. In addition, the first few chapters seem to be all about why people are attracted to "10's", models, actresses and other perfect people. There's even a page listing the costs of plastic surgery. I was hoping to find out how to better use the posative traits I was born with in order to create my own sex appeal. This book made me feel that I could only do that by attempting to look more like Pamela Anderson or Gretta Garbo. I think that if you are looking for practical advice in relationships that you might be better off trying "How to Make a man Fall in Love with You" or "Man Power--How to Win the Woman You Want" by Dr. Tracy Cabot. I found that 20 minutes on her website ... gave me more insite into sex appeal than the entire reading of this book. The reason I give it 2 stars instead of one is because it makes an interesting coffee table book and the pictures are beautiful.

Scientifically Sexy :)

There was a lot of interesting information about appeal on many levels(scent, appearance, voice, charisma etc.), from different cultures, and across time. However, some information just wasn't accurate. The information they put in there about what females supposedly like in a man was very different on some facts from how I feel(in some parts of the book). As far as the accurateness of what was appealing in a female, I can't fully vouch for that, but it did make me wonder on some factors. I also felt that it was so focused on this one subject(this is one small aspect of life), that it was something a bit unhealthy to indulge in the book too much. Overall though, I thought this was a great book. Being a left-brained person, I loved the approach to the "art" of beauty from a scientific perspective.

A Masterwork

I bought this book in 1987 when I took Morry Degroot's course in decision theory. I have used it ever since. The text makes all the connections between bayesian decision theory and probability theory and covers the useful techniques in both areas. Of course, Morry made the book even more effective through the excellent problem sets that are included. And they can be challenging as any really informative exercise would be.

I hesitated to write anything on this because it seemed presumptuous to "review" anything from Morry. But, I thought that I might be allowed this one testimonial to a person I will never forget and a book that has helped me for so long.

good handbook for finance and IO research

It is a wonderful book for financial and Industrial Organization research. The book illustrates how to use Bayisan Statistics for updating counsumers/traders' information about products/stocks, which is widely used in asymetric/coordination games and in uncertainty research.
The book is clearly written, easy to understand even without a solid backgroup in Baysian Statistics. And with a normal prior distribution of belief, you will get a beautiful/approachable normal posterior distribution. This definitely simplies the information-updating process much.

‘Stylistics’ is the study of language in the service of literary ends, and in Style in Fiction, Geoffrey Leech and Mick Short demonstrate how stylistic analysis can be applied to novels and stories. Writing for both students of English language and English literature, they show the practical ways in which linguistic analysis and literary appreciation can be combined, and illuminated, through the study of literary style. Drawing mainly on major works of fiction of the last 150 years, their practical and insightful examination of style through texts and extracts leads to a deeper understanding of how prose writers achieve their effects through language.

Since its first publication in 1981, Style in Fiction has established itself as a key textbook in its field, selling nearly 30,000 copies. Now, in this revised edition, the authors have added substantial new material, including two completely new concluding chapters. Standard text, on the dry side and awkwardly revised

At least judging by the authors' own comments in the book, the first edition of this book became a standard work in the linguistic analysis of fictional prose after it was published ca. 1980. Since I'm just starting to poke my nose back into this field after a hiatus of almost 40 years, I won't presume to question the book's importance. I do remember enough, though, about what it feels like to be a college student to believe that I'd be very disappointed to use it in a class. The subject matter is interesting, but the treatment here is overwhelming and dessicating. On the plus side, the authors are generous in furnishing illustrative passages from English literature for analysis.

The structure of this second edition (2007) has a few problems. The first edition of the book was completed in 1979, when the winds of structuralism, narratology, deconstructionism and other forms of "critical theory" were barely beginning to wreak havoc on Anglophone academia. As a result, that edition didn't discuss those trends at all. Unfortunately, that history remains pertinent today: even with this revised version, you're still pretty much reading that first edition until you get past the first 280 pages or so. If you've been dipping into any other more recent introductory books -- such as H. Porter Abbott's excellent "Cambridge Introduction to Narrative" -- it's hard to integrate what you read there with what you're reading here.

A related problem is that the authors have chosen a sedimentary style of updating the book. That is, aside from a few minor tweaks in the endnotes of a few chapters, all the updates are in two new chapters deposited on top of the old material, at the end. The first of these is a catch-up on 25 years' worth of critical trends, in roughly 22 pages. As often happens with this style of updating, the catch-up tends to be brisk and superficial, with a lot of name-dropping and not enough explanation. The second new chapter attempts to make up for this by applying several "new" techniques to a specimen text. The text is a very short story called "The Bucket and the Rope," from a 1929 collection by T.F. Powys, and here presented in full.

Powys's story has some charm and interest, and might be fun to teach in a freshman/sophomore college class (or even in a high school that wouldn't get up in arms about suicide and obliquely mentioned adultery). Here, however, the story is given a merciless lab-coat treatment for almost 40 pages, and has all the life bled out of it. The reasons why one might prefer one technique over another aren't well communicated. Nor are the explanations of specific techniques always clear. I got especially confused at pp. 322-323, in a section whose heading announces the method of Claude L�vi-Strauss: after telling us that L�vi-Strauss used a four-column tableau for analyzing stories, the authors proceed instead with another author's two-column method. By the end of the chapter, the authors have trudged through a partial gamut of critical approaches with much diligence and no joy.

There are some other knock-on effects of the layered approach to revision. The two new chapters use an entirely different citation format from the 10 original ones (surprising that no editor caught that). The endnotes in the original chapters, meanwhile, only occasionally show more recent material; mostly they still cite to sources from the 1980s and earlier. The index sometimes misses references to subjects in the add-on chapters. E.g., the entry for "implied author" doesn't pick up the authors' important discussion of why they no longer think this is a necessary concept (at p. 300).

Disappointing in a larger sense is a lack of interdisciplinarity all too common in works like this. Since the authors are linguists, the references tend to be limited to the linguistics tradition. So, for example, both Erich Auerbach and Dorrit Cohn, comparative literature scholars whose contributions are directly relevant to the book, are absent from these pages; even Roman Jakobson, a "structuralist" linguist who in the 1950s was among the first to do linguistic analyses of literature, gets only a passing mention.

Despite what seemed to me to be serious shortcomings, I subtract only one star, after considering the book's broad topical coverage and the wealth of analyses, as well as taking into account my own dilettantism in the field. But while there's a great deal one can learn from this book, after you've read it you may need some time for literature to seem enchanting once again.
