Toklas’s observation, “Say what you will about Mercedes, she’s had the most important women in the twentieth century,” was well justified, as her romantic conquests included such internationally renowned beauties as Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Isadora Duncan, and Eva Le Gallienne as well as Alla Nazimova, Tamara Karsavina, Pola Negri, and Ona Munson.

More than a record of her personal life and infamous romances, this account offers the first analysis of the complete oeuvre of de Acosta’s literary works, including three volumes of poetry, two novels, two film scripts, and a dozen plays. Although only two of her plays were ever published during her lifetime, four of them were produced, featuring such stage luminaries as John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, and Eva Le Gallienne. Critics praised her first volume of poetry, Moods, in 1919 and predicted her rise to literary fame, but the love of other women that fueled her writing also limited her opportunities to fulfill this destiny. Failing to achieve any lasting fame, she died in relative poverty at the age of seventy-five.

About the Author
A Professor Emeritus of Theater at Central College in Pella, Iowa, Robert A. Schanke is the editor of the international journal Theatre History Studies and the Southern Illinois University Press series Theater in the Americas. His five other books include Eva Le Gallienne: A Bio-Bibliography and Shattered Applause: The Lives of Eva Le Gallienne, a finalist for both the Lambda Literary Award and the Barnard Hewitt Award for theatre research.

Silk purse vs. sow's ear

Schanke's previous book on the stage actress Eva Le Gallienne was a knockout, and this one suffers in comparison. Perhaps the character of Mercedes was just too hard to pin down, and this may not be Schanke's fault. Acosta's work seems slight and dated, and no amount of cutting and pasting is going to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. This leaves her as a curiosity, a woman who must have been something in her prime, when so many gorgeous women succumbed to her; and then as a victim of what we would now call "erotomania," desperately clinging to the hope that someday Garbo would smile on her again, even though she must have known that "outing" Garbo in her insipid memoir "Here Lies the Heart" (which Le Gallienne heatedly called, "The Heart Lies and Lies and Lies") wasn't the way to curry favor with such a private individual. The last chapters of the book are pathetic in extremis, it's almost hard to believe Mercedes stayed alive from week to week she was so poor and abject, having no money of her own and totally dependent on charity from others. She was like Job in every way except, of course, genitally. But then again Job was probably pretty annoying too. Schanke does a fine job putting together the pieces of a fabulist's life, jigsaw pieces from many different puzzles.

Overdue but uninspired

De Acosta has long needed an biography since her own autobiography "Here Lies the Heart" often feels fictional. While Schanke gets the facts and corrects some of the autobiography's inaccuracies, he does not ever convince one that this was a story worth telling. The vitality and outragousness of her own book makes de Acosta a compelling figure, but the recitation of facts in this one does not.
This book has a hard task: telling the life story of a mediocre writer best known for who she had sex with. And while the book does not make a strong case for de Acosta being worth the attention, it is quite facinating for anyone interested in gay history. In addition, the figures arround Mercedes (such as her sister, Garbo, Poppy Kirk) emerge as intriguing in a way that de Acosta does not.

About the Author

Disappointment with John L. Person's book, Mastering the Stock Market

A good writer is one who knows his/her subject matter and who can explain it clearly to the reader. John Person's content presentation is poorly organized; in addition, there is a lack of sufficient explanation of important concepts related to technical analysis.
Perhaps I have become too accustomed to the outstanding technical analysis books written by John J. Murphy- books that are also published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. I own all of Mr. Murphy's books, and I continue to reread them to broaden my conceptual background in this very relevant field. A novice in the field of technical analysis would not be able to comprehend Mr. Person's content; the writer assumes incorrectly that the reader already has a prerequisite background. After having read Mr. Person's book in its entirety, I have only learned one concept: there is a positive correlation between seasonality and the sectors of the stock market.
In summary, Mr. Person's book does nothing to further the field of technical analysis.

Tools and Methods for the Successful Trader

To trade successfully in the markets you need an edge. If you don't know what your edge is then you don't have one. John Person's tools, methods, and rules presented to you the trader in Mastering the Stock Market are the necessary building blocks to build your edge. At the core of his trading approach are three uncorrelated tools/indicators: Candles, Person's Pivots, and Seasonality. Used togther these three form the heart of the trading strategy. Next by using On Balance Volume and Breadth Studies as confirming indicators the high probability trade opportunity is brought into tight focus. When trading stock index futures, currencies, and commodities the Commitments of Traders data adds another valuable data point in understanding "who owns the market". Lastly, and most importantly in my opinion, John covers position sizing and risk management in detail. No trader can ever be successfull without proper trading discipline. Mastering the Stock Market is an outstanding resource for novice and experienced traders alike. I recommend it.

CHEAPLY PRINTED and it was DIFFICULT TO READ MANY TABLES and CHARTS

For a $59 book, it is very cheaply printed. The paper is coarse, "oatmeal grained". The printing is tight, very little space between lines and the type should be larger. The charts and tables should be larger and printing larger. The pages should be larger than 5.5x9 to accommodate charts and tables that should be larger. I have never seen a more squeezed in table in any other book than Table 2.2 on pg. 31. It was virtually impossible to read. Also numbers in shaded blocks were very very difficult to read and too small usually.

This is a very interesting true story that deals with many Federal Government Agencies. It is unbelievable how Federal Agencies like the Bureau of land Management can do nothing and justify their actions. Legal Chronicle on Voisin Heritage

A great chronicle of the legal battles and documentation retrieval efforts of the Voisin family. This is a fact book, not fiction. The honesty of the Mr. Dixon's comments on governmental agencies and their avoidance of acknowledging the ownership although the evidence is there. Ok, let's just give the good ole reason of Statute of Limitations.
The Voisin's have spent over one hundred years in legal disputes in their endeavors. What would the original Grantee, Juan Voisin (Jean) say today if he knew? Good thing he died in 1820, before the battles began.
It is clear in the book that the Voisin's have not called it quits and will continue the tradition of legal battles on the disappearing Last Isle.
The Voisin's will not take no for an answer and this book was made to keep generations abreast of what is happening, in legal matters. Continue on Voisin Family.

This is a great book about Last Island

This is a great book about Last Island. The terrible storm claimed the lives of many, many people among them some of my relatives. So many people of St. Mary, Iberia Parish and surrounding areas had summer homes there and I am sure have lost someone or their summer homes there. There are I am sure many stories to tell of this island in Louisiana by many people. Get this book and I'm sure it will hold some memories for you.

Loads of action

Kennedy is my favorite writer at the moment. He is able to draw you into the action and keeps it interesting moving between continents with a cast of characters becoming very familiar to me. CIA agent Dylan Kane is once again called upon to do the impossible while risking his life. I especially enjoyed the reintroduction of Maj Lee Fang from Chinese Military Intelligence determined to prevent corrupt Chinese officials from destroying her homeland and of course the Delta Force is right where the action is. The ending of this one leaves me impatient for the next installment. Highly recommended.

This is one of his best. I was up late last night. J Robert Kennedy, an author, should be as well known as James Rollins, David Baldacci, or Brad Thor. His writing is as good or better with more original story lines. I would suggest you read all of his books as I have. They always entertain, thought provoking, and have realistic plot lines. As much as any author who rights high octane, action, adventure novels. Thank you again for a great book

As a longtime fan, I've become tired of the Acton series; too formulaic. The Kane series is better and this book is the best of the best. I couldn't put it down. Exceptionally well paced, great action and, just really, really good.

About the Author
Gary Haggard is Professor of Computer Science at Bucknell University. His research in data structures focuses on the implementation of effective algorithms for computing invariants for large combinatorial structures such as graphs. Dr. Haggard�s current work is directed towards finding chromatic polynomials of large graphs.

John Schlipf is a Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Cincinnati. His research interests include logic programming and deductive databases, algorithms for satisfiability, computability and complexity, formal verification, and model theory.

Sue Whitesides is Professor of Computer Science at McGill University. She holds a Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin and a Masters from Stanford University. Her research interests lie within combinatorial mathematics and theoretical computer science.

Extremely poor organization.

This book has an extremely poor organization of information. It's like the authors just threw a bunch of information at the book without thinking about how a student has to go through learning the mathematical concepts. The only reason I have to use this book is because a professor from my university was one of the authors. Get another book on discrete mathematics if you want to really learn the material.

A text for the masochistic learner

This was a required textbook for a course at my university. My professor pulled all the homework from the ends of each chapter. This part of the book is one of my biggest gripes. The reading sections of this book pack a large amount of material in a brief page or two for each section followed by homework exercises. The exercise sections have are about as long as the actual information sections, meaning they are packed with questions. This would be a positive for this book except the questions aren't similar, so the included CD with the odd problems solved will often be of little help because question 3 will be a completely different sort of problem than question 4. Since each problem is so unique, you'll often be left dealing with problems that are considerably more complex than anything found in the reading sections of the text. If you are using the questions of this book for homework, be prepared to use google extensively. As an example, the book may explain how to perform an operation on 2 sets of numbers. Then in the homework, it will ask you to perform the same operation on 5 sets abstract sets without ever explaining how to go about doing that.

I ended up receiving an A in the course, but that was after spending ~8 hours for each 10-14 question homework. Most of that time was spent on the internet trying to learn the material from whatever sites I could find. The reading sections of this text are an excersize in frustration. In one of the explanations for a concept in the book, the author literally uses the phrase "from [problem], it is obvious that the answer is [answer]." That was the entire explanation on the topic. A textbook should never say the phrase "from X, it is obvious that Y" if the whole section is supposed to be telling you how to find Y from X in the first place. This is an introductory text into formal logic, proofs, and set mathematics. Yet, you'll often find that the author skips steps in his solutions which may be obvious to someone familiar with the material but that is obviously not the target of this text. There is an occasional table for reference which doesn't explain what the relationship between anything on the table is (I'm looking at you, Table of Commonly Used Tautologies....). This book covers a great number of topics in a fairly small book, for a textbook that is. However, this book suffers from a lack of depth necessary to reach its potential.

If you have a choice, skip this text. If, like me, you are required to use this text.... Google everything and god help you.

This textbook was the exact same one I needed for class and was MUCH cheaper than buying from the school store. It was even in better condition than what was advertised! I would definitely recommend this book.

Decent overview

"Environmental Ethics" consists of material written by Michael Boylan as well as anthologized writings by a number of environmental ethicists. The first chapter is a description of the concept of a worldview and its application to environmental ethics. This is fairly difficult material for the philosophical novice and is not always easy to understand. (I might mention that I taught philosophy for more than 25 years and was not always clear on exactly what Boylan was saying in this section.) There follows a very brief discussion of four different ethical theories––intuitionism, virtue ethics, utilitarianism, and deontology. Each one is treated with such brevity as to be of limited usefulness.

Of more use are the writings of various authors that comprise much of the remainder of the book. These writings are divided into sections on the land ethic, ecofeminism, anthropocentric and biocentric justifications for environmentalism, animal rights, biodiversity, and sustainable development, among other issues. Boylan has provided a fairly well-balanced set of articles representing a variety of perspectives on these issues. As is the case with many anthologies, the anthologized material varies in terms of readability. Some of it is very easy to understand; some of it is not.
