Nice effort, a lot of screenshots, too much focus on iOS

Two things stick out when you get your hands on this book. The first is that it's not so thick (280 pages). The second thing when you open the book and flip through the pages is that you see a lot of full color screenshots (a big plus) but little accompanying text (a big minus for me). You can literally read this book in a couple of hours. I think it would be more interesting if the UI pattern choices were larded with a little background and conclusions from human interaction- and user experience studies. Now it's just a big (but not up-to-date or exhaustive) collection of screenshots of how apps have solved certain mobile challenges which I might grab now and then for some inspiration.

The title claims that the book contains "UI patterns for iOS, Android and More", but the majority is iOS. I'm and Android developer and the Android examples in this book are taken from ancient Android versions. Android (and iOS) have evolved a lot and have much nicer UI patterns / solutions for certain problems you can find in this this book. If you seek Android UI/UX advise you are much better of keeping an eye on the Android Design website where information is updated, rewritten and added frequently. Although it's probably a good thing to elaborate on how patterns are used in current apps around the globe 'current' is bound to be outdated fast in a print book. So use this book and the screenshots in it as a view of how things are done in the 'past' and you can maybe find a use for it. It does contain a wealth of pattern names in the appendix, which is great to create a common vocabulary between designers and developers.

For $44.99 I wouldn't recommend this book to others. A price of $29.99 is more suitable and would maybe add an extra star. It is a good book for beginning mobile designers and developers. More seasoned pro's probably have their own on-line and more up-to-date resources on this topic and probably have their own view and opinion of what is good mobile design.

Valuable and time saving

The main goal for every (not only mobile) application is to be usable. One of the usability related elements is user interface design. It should be predictable, helping users to do their tasks, easy and quick to learn and use. This book contains a lot of mobile app example screens decorated with reasonable UX designer textual comments. They may be very useful while creating a new mobile application or improving existing one. The book's content is very inspiring. Lot's of examples help to learn how to create good and avoid bad designs (Chapter 10. Anti-Patters is a good example here). A very valuable and time saving book.

A glossary of mobile design patterns for inspiration and reference

Theresa Neil's book, as another reviewer mentioned, is light on text. It does not provide in-depth analysis on the usability or best use-cases for each pattern. However, the author nicely presents successful and less successful emerging design patterns for many mobile user interface challenges -- from navigation to sign-up forms. This book and is a quick read, but can also serve as reference and inspiration.

Most importantly, being able to spot these recurring patterns is helpful in analyzing user interfaces you encounter every day. And that, in turn, should help you improve your own designs.

Thee book for wheel building.

This is a great book for wheel building. If you're thinking about building your own wheels this book is the one resource you can't do without. Explains why it's important for different wheel types to have different cross patterns and thicker spokes. How to center the offset on the rear wheel, how to remove tension and set the correct tension on the wheels. Just everything you could think of. Not a textbook, it's only 120 pages, but it's also not easy reading but not rocket science either. Some math is needed but nothing you couldn't handle if you made it through high school. This is the book every shop should have for reference or just to explain things to a customer. Great diagrams when needed.

For the specialist in the making

Bluntly: If you are a tinkerer whose greatest ambition is to true a wheel or venture into replacing a spoke set this book is not for you. Any good bicycle manual (my favorite is Zinn's) and / or online resource will give the hands-on information you need.

However, if you are a tinkerer who wants to become a pro, or want to build your own quality wheels from scratch; or if you are just curious and seeking a comprehensive understanding how your "wheelie" works, I recommend this little treatise as a must-have reference. It delivers comprehensive information about the inner workings of your bicycle wheels (I was surprised with which astounding forces their structure have to deal with!) plus useful hints on what would be best to chose for your project.

Be advised that this book is very technical,with a good deal of math in it. It clearly makes emphasis on the engineering aspect of wheel building. It might be advisable to get a more hands-on practical info as a complimentary information source if you don't have one already.

This book is currently only available in hardcover format and that is good, because it has many graphics and data tables which still are easier to read on paper; and includes some blank pages for making notes which is cool. The book is sheer quality: Nice paper, solidly made, with beautiful binding; format and weight are just right; the font is easily readable. It makes a perfect gift for someone who is serious about bicycle mechanics, and at this price it's a good deal.

This book is a very good book. it is well researched and pretty easy to follow. the illustrations are clear and easy to understand. If you want to understand the spoked wheel you would be hard pressed to find a better book.
My only problem with this book is while it does an excellent job of explaining and taking you step by step through building a three cross wheel it does not guide you through a four cross wheel which is what I wanted to build; however with this book and a couple of other resources I was able to build the wheel I wanted.
I still like this book so well I bought it a second time and even paid more for it the second time, the first one was stolen.

The authors also focus on him not just as a singer but a song writer and poet and why he wrote what he wrote. It was detailed in a way that I absolutely loved and made me feel like I really knew him more than just "The Doors".

An incredibly useful book that allows the correct philosophy of how we learn as children, follow teachers and their creativity through MS and HS. An incredible resource for the pre-service band teacher - a great resource for band directors who need some direction in relating everyday concepts in different ways.

This is easily one of the most wonderfully boring textbooks I have ever had to read in my college career. It made an incredibly boring professor that much more boring! If that's what the author was going for, he achieved it without a doubt. I only give this book three stars, because I got an A in the class. I'm not saying this book helped with that in any way, though.

THE most pivotal book I've read in my business career

Some people have cynically commented that you only need to read 20% of this book, and the rest is all repetition.

Those people do not actually understand the fractal nature of the 80/20 principle - how pervasive it is, or the extent to which you really need to immerse yourself in these concepts. Their opinions are worthless.

I first read this book in 2003. I got to page 14 and Richard was explaining how 80/20 is closely related to chaos theory. I suddenly had an epiphany - making realizations that weren't even explicitly stated - and realized that inside every 80/20 is another 80/20, and another and another. 80/20 is fractal!

Suddenly I looked out the window and saw 80/20 EVERYWHERE - in the trees, in the street, in the carpet in my house, in nearly every column of every spreadsheet in my business. Before I'd barely seen it at all, and even then only in the rear view mirror. After, I saw it everywhere all around me.

At the time I was just starting to crack the code on Google AdWords, and I realized 80/20 is the key to pretty much everything in AdWords. And in marketing itself. 80/20 became my secret weapon. It was the backbone of AdWords and I included an 80/20 chapter in my very first ebook, "Definitive Guide to Google AdWords" which eventually became Entrepreneur Press's "Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords" which is the world's #1 book on internet advertising. It also inspired my book "80/20 Sales and Marketing."

Richard makes a key observation, which is the difference between 80/20 ANALYSIS and 80/20 THINKING. Analysis is backward-looking. 80/20 Thinking is forward looking. When you know, in advance, that whatever you do is going to be 80/20 and nothing you do can change that, you artificially stack the deck to favor early successes. You kill your runts faster. You search for patterns that most people miss, and shortcut months or years of failure.

Richard also delves into many subtleties of how 80/20 manifests in business, and how most businesses are losing money every time they sell 20% of their product line. This is a very big deal.

I'm now reading this book, 13 years later, AGAIN (not sure how many times I've cracked it) and it's still producing new jewels. Yes, you can read 20% of this book and it could still potentially change your life. But if you understand 80/20, you should read that kind of book 5 times and you can be nearly certain that you'll get 10X your time investment back every single time.

When Richard starts getting philosophical near the end about this applying to relationships and whatnot, don't give in to the temptation to think he's over-reaching. He's not. 80/20 is a fundamental axiom of cause and effect, one of the great secret laws of the universe.

I've read a LOT of great books but this one tops the list. It's been worth many millions of dollars to me in my career.

The 20% That Matters

This book does an excellent job explaining the importance of focusing on what gets the most results in any outcome driven system. From the initial work of Pareto we see that in most things 20% of actions lead to 80% of results. The percentages can be more like 5/95 or 10/90 in some things but the key to the principle is to discover where the majority of results come from. This a great book that really gets the reader's mind focused on filtering what matters and what does not matter in any life situation whether business, sports, relationships, health, or your personal life. This is a key principle that has lead many people to success whether they knew they were using it or not. What really matters? What actions make all the difference? This book explains how to put the principles in action. How do you develop a good filter to know what matters and what doesn't.

A survival manual for an increasingly complex, noisey, overwhelming world

The greatest challenge people face today is the tsunami of data, information, options, media, etc. on and off the Internet. A giant wave of trivia submerges truly important things like family time, thinking time, selective study time, and time for creating something uniquely of value for the world with the energy, talents and skills we have been given.

It would be mistake to brush off the 80/20 Principle as just another book and the principle just another strategy, method or principle. Given the challenges we all face I would classify it as an essential survival manual (for business or the individual) in an increasingly complex twenty first century.

This isn't a book to place on your shelf or to just casually read. It's a book and principle to study, review and internalize until it becomes a part of automatic thinking and action.

If you don't have or run a business you can ignore the business portions. You'll still get value from the rest.

Avinash Dixit is Emeritus John J.F. Sherrerd University Professor of Economics at Princeton University, where he offered his popular freshman course in game theory. He is among the world’s leading economists, having made fundamental contributions in several major fields as well as in game theory. He is the author of many books, including Dixit/Nalebuff: Thinking Strategically (Norton, 1991), Dixit/Pindyck: Investment Under Uncertainty (Princeton University Press, 1994), and Dixit/Nalebuff: The Art of Strategy (Norton, 2009).

Of course. It is an updated version of their best selling book [Thinking Strategically]. I have taught an introduction to Game Theory course to college undergraduates for years and used their earlier version "Thinking strategically" as a textbook. Nalebuff and Dixit's effort on updating their classic became less than good news to college students. They put too much materials about their ABC documentary which was taken under Dr. Nalebuff's guidance while trying to put too much materials in otherwise a simple-clear book. I strongly recommend you to go to the bookstore and buy their earlier version "thinking strategically" rather than this 'confusing/messy" version.

Unnecessary after "Thinking Strategically"

There is absolutely no need to read this book if you've read Thinking Strategically: The Competitive Edge in Business, Politics, and Everyday Life.

I'm not certain why they exist as two separate books. The content is almost identical, and 90% of the examples in this one were lifted from that. I have no idea why this is touted as a "sequel." It is not. It's just Thinking Strategically repackaged (but I will say that its package is prettier). The tagline says that it's a "guide to success in business and life," but it is not. It is game theory explained in an accessible way.

I love game theory. I studied economics in college, and game theory had been my favorite class. I enjoyed Thinking Strategically and looked forward to reading this one. I was disappointed. Had I not read Thinking Strategically, I probably would have found this enjoyable, but I'm giving it two stars for the false advertising.
