About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student’s perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her publications are known.

Dr. Marieb has partnered with Benjamin Cummings for over 30 years. Her first work was Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual (Cat Version), which came out in 1981. In the years since, several other lab manual versions and study guides, as well as the softcover Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, have hit the campus bookstores. This textbook, now in its 10th edition, made its appearance in 1989 and is the latest expression of her commitment to the needs of students studying human anatomy and physiology.

�

Dr. Marieb has given generously to colleges both near and far to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time and who would be unable to continue their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Clapp Laboratory at that college. Dr. Marieb also contributes to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she generously provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, she underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the university.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

Dr. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology� CD-ROM series.

�

When not involved in academic pursuits, Dr. Marieb is a world traveler and has vowed to visit every country on this planet. Shorter term, she serves on the scholarship committee of the Women’s Resources Center and on the board of directors of several charitable institutions in Sarasota County. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts and enjoys a competitive match of doubles tennis.

�

Dr. Katja Hoehn is a professor in the Department of Biology at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Canada. Dr. Hoehn’s first love is teaching. Her teaching excellence has been recognized by several awards during her 21 years at Mount Royal University. These include a PanCanadian Educational Technology Faculty Award (1999), a Teaching Excellence Award from the Students’ Association of Mount Royal (2001), and the Mount Royal Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award (2004).

�

Dr. Hoehn received her M.D. (with Distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan, and her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Dalhousie University. In 1991, the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation presented her with the Max Forman (Jr.) Prize for excellence in medical research. During her Ph.D. and postdoctoral studies, she also pursued her passion for teaching by presenting guest lectures to first- and second-year medical students at Dalhousie University and at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Hoehn has been a contributor to several books and has written numerous research papers in Neuroscience and Pharmacology. She oversaw a recent revision of the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology� CD-ROM series modules, and coauthored the newest module, The Immune System.

�

Following Dr. Marieb’s example, Dr. Hoehn provides financial support for students in the form of a scholarship that she established in 2006 for nursing students at Mount Royal University.

�

Dr. Hoehn is also actively involved in the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and is a member of the American Association of Anatomists. When not teaching, she likes to spend time outdoors with her husband and two sons, compete in triathlons, and play Irish flute.

Great A&P book for future health professionals

Very in-depth A&P textbook. This is not the most recent version, but it is the one required for my class for some reason. It is an excellent reference and provides details about how and why the body works the way it does. I am reading it from cover to cover and enjoying it all.

A Pleasant Adventure

Although Talbot Munday is better known for writing the more popular King of the Khyber Rifles, this story of desert adventure is sure to please. It is narrated by an Englishman who accompanies the famous American James Grim on a perilous journey across the desert to Petra to confront, in his own stronghold, a ruthless and deadly robber called Ali Higg. A powerful desert chieftan, Ali Higg has been terrorizing the Arabs instead of uniting them. Along with James Grim is his Sikh friend and companion and an aging thief and his many sons and grandsons. This troup of misfits set out to accomplish the impossible. Will they succeed? It's a good read.

I returned my copy because it arrived without the colorful dust cover you show in the illustration. I received another copy without a dust cover. The quality of printing varies from page to page, in general, poor.

Great tool for worship teams!

I really enjoyed reading The Worshiping Artist. His clear and Biblical explanations about worship and praise are clear and compelling. The emphasis on specific expressions to praise were refreshing to read, since few books on worship address those properly (if at all). Especially helpful and insightful were his three questions and chapters: Who is God, Who am I and What is God inviting me to do? Wonderfully typical in his writings, Noland begins with a modern-day, easy-to-relate-to story, then lists several group questions, followed by the explanatory material, which makes up the bulk of each chapter. I didn't quite get what the author was trying to communicate in the last chapter on icons. However, there is plenty of quality material in the first nine chapters to offset any uncertainties in the last one! I highly recommend this book to worship teams and lead worshipers!

A Book for everyone involved in church music.

This book was used as a study guide for musicians at my church during the summer when the choir was not singing and it was really helpful to everyone to get a
handle on what it means to be involved in this kind of ministry and how we could each imporve our own approach and attitude to what we are doing to assist in
worship.

The Worshiping Artist is used by our church choir during or meditation time before we begin practicing our songs.
The book serves as food for thought and it also helps to inspire us.
The choir looks forward to the meditation time and to what Noland has to impart.

A psychologist and educator, and a pioneer in the field of cognition, Bruner provides an outline for a new synthesis of inquiry into mind and culture. The book consists of the 1989-90 Jerusalem-Harvard lectures divided into four chapters. The first, "The Proper Study of Man," is a critique of the current antihistorical,anticultural bias of cognitive psychology, especially its information-processing model of the mind. "Folk Psychology as an Instrument of Culture" asserts that culturally shaped notions, stories, and narratives organize experience and manage expectations. "Entry into Meaning" views the beginnings of social understanding as a capacity to render experience in terms of narrative discourse (to be in a culture is to be in a set of connecting stories). Finally, "Autobiography and Self" illustrates the classic concept of Self from the perspective of cultural psychology--that "selves are not isolated nuclei of consciousness locked in the head, but are 'distributed' interpersonally." A challenging manifesto for a cultural psychology by a major figure in the field.

About the Author
Robert Carver is Professor of Business Administration at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts. He teaches courses in business statistics, information systems, business and society, as well as the Department's Senior Honors Research Seminar. He is author of two statistics texts for Duxbury Press, and his research has appeared in THE JOURNAL OF STATISTICS EDUCATION, THE JOURNAL OF BUSINESS ETHICS, THE JOURNAL OF CONSUMER MARKETING, THE PUBLIC PRODUCTIVITY REVIEW, PS: POLITICAL SCIENCE AND POLITICS, PUBLIUS, and THE PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION REVIEW. He earned his A.B. from Amherst College and his M.P.P. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

Jane Gradwohl Nash is Professor of Psychology at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts. She teaches General Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, and Introduction to Statistics. Prior to arriving at Stonehill, Professor Nash taught at Quinnipiac College in Connecticut and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University, where she conducted research concerning cognitive processing in writing. Her current research is in the areas of knowledge change and judgment and decision-making. Her research has appeared in THE JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY, ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR AND HUMAN DECISION PROCESSES, HEADACHE, JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL EDUCATION, RESEARCH IN THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH, and WRITTEN COMMUNICATION. Professor Nash received her B.A. in Psychology and Spanish from Grinnell College. She received her M.S. and Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology with an emphasis in Cognitive Psychology at Ohio University.

Just one book told me that this is the ultimate devil's advocate personality, but this book has told me another thing too. Established around 1830, the Kingdom of Jimma Abba Jifar was the largest and most powerful of the five monarchies formed by the Oromo in the Gibe region of southwestern Ethiopia. Although the Oromo are known for their democratic ("republican") gada system, Jimma and other Gibe states arose through a series of processes and historical events in the 19th century that propelled certain men into positions of supreme power. Based on intensive fieldwork in Jimma, this book presents a study of the history and organization of Jimma under its most powerful ruler, Abba Jifar II (1878-1932). Lewis stresses the dynamic aspects of politics and places the politicial history and structure of Jimma in perspective by noting its similarities and differences to monarchial systems in other parts of Africa and the rest of the world. He also explores those distinctive aspects of the Oromo culture which gave Jimma Abba Jifar its particular political style and includes an ethnographic study of an Oromo Muslim agricultural community.

This is one of the first published professional anthropological works about the Oromo and will be of strong interest to social scientists as well as African anthropologists and historians.

About the Author
Herbert S. Lewis, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has been concerned with Oromo and Ethiopian studies since the late 1950s. In addition to this book and numerous articles about various aspects of Oromo culture and history, he is the author of After the Eagles Landed: The Yemenites of Israel, a study of cultural change and ethnicity. He received his doctorate in Anthropology from Columbia University in 1963.

Interesting look at a much neglected part of Ethiopia

A must-read for anyone interested in Ethiopian history, both for its explicit and implicit information. I'll explain:

Explicitly, it presents the history of a Kingdom that was only recently incorporated into the Ethiopian Empire. The origins, mechanisms, social and economics of this small but rather wealthy kingdom in what is now south-west Ethiopia.

Implicitly i thought it contained rather interesting information too. At first i was tempted to disregard the whole book seeing that the author only uses the word "Oromo" in the front page, and then insists on using the "Galla" word, which nowadays has extremely bad connotations (and i mean REALLY bad connotations!). The author addresses this problem, but his biggest mistake is that he does it at the end of the book, not at the beginning. So, all Oromo readers out there, read the end (the epilogue) before, otherwise you may get very angry.

If you're going to visit this region of Ethiopia, i really recomend it as not only the Jimma Kingdom of the Aba Yifar dynasty is discussed, but also the neighbouring kingdoms of Kaffa, Enarya, etc.
