About the Author
Virginia Sanchez-Korrol is Professor Emerita at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. She is the author of From Colonia to Community: The History of Puerto Ricans in New York City (University of California Press, 1994) and co-editor of Latinas in the United States: A Historical Encyclopedia (Indiana University Press, 2006) and Latina Legacies: Identity, Biography and Community (Oxford University Press, 2005). Chair of the Library and Archives Advisory Group of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, Sanchez-Korrol writes a blog about Puerto Ricans and Latinas in the United States for The Huffington Post.

A significant contribution to history

As a student and teacher of Latin American history, I found this work created an indomitable figure, an abolitionist, a feminist, and a fierce patriot of her beloved Cuba, Emilia was pressured into exile for standing up to the oppressive and brutal Spanish regime in Cuba. An outspoken critic of the Spanish authorities, she demanded nothing short of complete independence for Cuba. Considered an enemy of the state, she and her family were forced to emigrate to the United States where Emilia lived most of her life in New York City. There, even in the face of personal adversity, she managed to raise money and armies to wage the Cuban Ten Years War (1868-1878). The only Spanish possessions still under the iron grip of Spain at the time, Cuba and Puerto Rico, would each go on to wage unsuccessful rebellions against Spanish rule culminating in the Spanish-American War, (1898).

Through meticulous historical research, historian, Virginia Sanchez Korrol, imagines the woman Emilia might have been. The author's astute knowledge of Caribbean history and Latino/American women throughout this period, allows her to vividly portray Emilia's world in Cuba as well as in New York, with beauty, humor, deep cultural understanding and compassion for her heroine. Her ability to weave Emilia's letters, her husband's memoirs, and historical manuscripts and documents into a vivid, intriguing portrait of Emilia as a mother, a wife, a revolutionary and a Cuban-American, resurrects Emilia from the dustbins of history and breaths life into an important foot soldier in the global struggle for freedom and dignity. Meh material.

Shows pretty much zero examples as to how to solve a problem. It leaves you with more questions than with answers.
My professor uses this textbook pretty much just for the section homework problems.
If you're using this book and find your self stumped, don't even bother looking at this lazy textbook. Just find a tutor, or use google.

Nancy Bush is a contributor to PieceWork magazine and owner of The Wooly West, a mail-order and online yarn business. She has worked as a freelance designer and consultant to several yarn companies and as a contributing editor to Knitter's Magazine. Her designs and articles have appeared in Interweave Knits, Spin-Off, Threads, and Vogue Knitting. Beautiful patterns clear enough for beginner lace knitter

I had been tempted to buy this book after reading the buzz by a couple of popular bloggers, but delayed because of previous unsuccessful attempts at lace knitting. I'm definitely not a beginning knitter, just new to lace knitting. I also couldn't see myself ever going anywhere that a lace shawl would fit in (I'm a blue-jeans type of girl). However, when one other reviewer on Amazon said that the patterns were relatively easy, I jumped off the fence and ordered. I also figured that if/when I did knit one of these beautiful shawls, it could be a present to a niece to wear at her wedding.

After looking at all the patterns and reading Nancy's tips on making nupps, I started with the Peacock Tail and Leaf pattern scarf. It looked to be small enough to allow finishing in a reasonable length of time. It also had enough nupps to make it interesting but not so many that it was scary.

After completing the bottom edging and 4 repeats of the center pattern, I'd like to pass along my own tip for knitting the nupps. When I get to those, I use a double pointed needle that's several sizes larger than the one I'm using to knit the 7 nupp stitches. (For instance, I'm using a US 5 circular needle to knit the scarf, but use a US 10 dpn to knit the nupp stitches.) After knitting the nupp stitches on the big needle, I slide those stitches to the other end of the dpn, put a marker on the smaller right hand needle and then slip the nupp stitches to the right hand needle. I knit the next couple of stitches in the pattern loosely to make sure I don't tighten up the big nupp stitches. On the return purl row, the start of the big nupp stitches is very evident, and the marker stops me from purling through any additional stitches.

One other caution - when purling through the nupp stitches, be sure you get all seven. the next to last stitch (which was a yarnover) especially tends to hug the left hand needle making it hard to get the point of the right hand needle under it. If this happens, your nupp will have a loose stitch that looks bad. This is a good reason to use sharp pointed lace needles instead of the blunt bamboo ones I'm using.

Worth more than its price

Knitters, we rarely knit for ourselves, so give yourself the treat of buying this book. I had at least twice the worth of what I spent on it, just looking at the pictures of this beautiful art form.....and even more in wallowing in the idea I might knit one of the projects presented! The history of this knitting is fascinating and a great read, but the pieces are the stars of the book. Patterns are presented in both traditional and charted form with tips, tricks, and potential mistakes and how to avoid them, all in plain, easy-to-read-and-follow format - - and better still, the stitches aren't that hard once you read the directions (no third hand or Doctorate needed). Nancy Bush is an established knitter and knitting author, but this book takes all prizes. I just wish Amazon had allowed me more stars to give to this book.

An excellent book, but slightly flawed

I must admit, the lovely cover is what got me interested in this book. I am new to lace knitting (but not new to knitting) and had only completed one simple lace project when I bought this book. I started off with the "Lily of the Valley" scarf. I checked the errata online and saw that any corrections had already been incorporated into my printing. I started on the scarf and toward the end of the first repeat of the pattern, I realized that there is an error in the pattern that was not in the errata and that can't be easily remedied correctly except by completely reworking the pattern. How frustrating. I fudged a modification that let me keep working. This was quite disappointing. I ended up frogging that project and did another of Nancy Bush's patterns from "Lace Style" -- a Lily of the Valley shawl. The pattern was really easy and fun to knit, until I got to the knitted on border, the same kind of border ("modern") in many of the patterns in this book. She recommends slipping the first stitch of every row, and then gives instructions for picking up stitches around the edges for knitting on the border. There was no way to make the border look neat. I must have picked up stitches for the border about a hundred times, then decided to quit and bind off the silly thing. It looks lovely the way it is. I would recommend that you not use a knitted on border unless you knit the first stitch of every row, rather than slipping it. Otherwise, you end up with unsightly holes. The knitted on border is not considered authentic by the Estonians anyway. They also do not use Kitchener stitch. Nevertheless, it's a nice book and if you want to do an Estonian "style" scarf or shawl that is not completely traditional, this is a very good book.

Poorly written, outdated

I know it's a textbook, but it is painfully dry. Author explains devices and techniques poorly and should rely more on images. I found myself looking devices/concepts up online, only to find that what she is describing (10x wiring for example) is no longer used. There are images in the book, but they are extremely outdated (pictures of students using what appears to be the very first Mac computer). The author spends (wastes) a great deal of the reader's time saying that topics were covered in a previous chapter, or topic will be covered in a later chapter, or topic will be covered later/earlier in this chapter. The author also writes in a spiraling fashion. She briefly introduces a device/concept, then later in the chapter explains it a bit more, then later again in the chapter she revisits it. This makes finding the information you're looking for tedious and (from a student's point of view) makes taking notes annoying and drawn out. I bet if all of those wasted sentences were removed from the text and the information was presented sufficiently, the book would be much smaller, cheaper and read much quicker. Finally, the book is littered with grammatical and other errors. In one section, the author is explaining a device and refers the reading to a graphic - which is the wrong graphic.If you have to get this book for a class, I am sorry. Rent it or borrow it. If you want some information on AT, save your money and look elsewhere.

Honestly, worst textbook I have read in a while.

This book is informative in the sense that a lot of this information is not contained all together in another textbook. It is recommended by RESNA as a useful tool for studying for the Assistive Technology Practitioner (ATP) Exam, so I bought it thinking that there was no way a professional society would recommend this text without having read it first. However, I found it to be poorly written, repetitive, and generally hard to understand. There are countless grammatical and spelling mistakes that are distracting from the topics. The author seemingly takes paragraphs that have already been written in another chapter and drops them in a later chapter, and then states that it was discussed in that previous chapter. Then why rewrite it? There are so many brief descriptions of products that are unclear and outdated. I know this book recently came out with its fourth edition, but it definitely needs a fifth soon.

About the Author

I don't have much to add to what others have said except to say I am re-reading this book due to having someone drain my energy. I noticed that there was something off about this person but didn't know what. A psychic friend told me that this person was pulling my energy as we sat next to each other in a meeting.
When I arrived home, I went straight to this book for some techniques. Like some other reviewers, I'm not big on complex rituals, nor on using herbs and stones very much although I sometimes do. I tend to prefer visualizations, of which there are plenty in this book, from requesting a pillar of protection from one of the archangels to others such as visualizing your own sphere of protection, cutting psychic cords which can also drain energy or repairing the aura.
While thinking about this experience, I did not feel that the person was being malicious, just misguided. I have no need to send anything harmful her way, I will just have a psychic boundary to protect myself. And I plan to make those part of my psychic health maintenance.

Wow, Christopher Penczak really knows his stuff. Check it out!

Christopher Penczak's The Witch's Shield is a MUST HAVE book for anyone who has ever felt the effects of someone else's wrath or negative energy. A few weeks ago, I started experiencing a person harassing me, and having strong negativity around them.

I started working with Christopher Penczak's "The Witch's Shield" book and Protection CD in which you envision your aura being encased with a clear crystal egg that allows the good energy in, yet repels and neutralizes any negative or harmful energies. He has a beautiful voice that is easy to listen, relax, and visualize with.

I have uploaded two aura photos in this book's customer reviews area. The first one has purples, pinks, and blues in it, and that is how it typically looks, as I get it done twice a year at a local psychic fair. I worked with The Witch's Shield meditation CD for 3 days prior to having the second aura photo taken, and I couldn't believe how it came out. It clearly shows a golden egg around me. At first I thought a mistake had occurred, but then I recalled that I had been working with this protection CD and it was clearly being shown in the second aura photo.

If you have EVER doubted that this stuff works, check these aura photos out. I am a Usui, Tibetan, & Karuna Reiki Master Teacher that practices in Denver, CO. You never know what kind of people that you might come across when you are out in public. It is a great idea to work with a meditation CD such as this for self-protection. Psychic self Defense

I loved this book!!
Not a very long and drawn out book,I read it in one lazy afternoon!
But it has a lot of great information for those of us long on the path and those starting out as well,
I like his point of view and his non judgemental approach, I have always felt that Wicca is for those who take personal
responsibility ..I found it very enjoyable and can only imagine that the few negative reviews came from people that didn't actually read the entire book cover to cover.
